Best speed square you can buy for the money

Rand Omerik May 14, 2025

After reading the reviews already posted I had to write one of my own. The first thing everyone needs to understand is that those leaving poor reviews are people who clearly are NOT skilled carpenters, nor do they understand how to use this tool. I have owned and used one of these squares for over 30 years and it has been one of the best layout tools I've ever owned. It is perfect for rough framing, siding and aluminum work, and is an incredible time saver. The only complaint I could possibly make about it is that the adjustment knob is just a little too tall, and that can interfere with some circular saw bodies when using it as a guide - which is one of the areas where it otherwise shines. If you “need” a manual, maybe start out with a simpler version from Swanson or whoever. Your lack of understanding is not a design flaw of the tool. I also find it hilarious that a couple of Brits can't figure out the imperial scale. Those of us who actually know what we're doing found this square to be one of the best tool innovations in carpentry in more than a generation when it first came along, and decades later, I'm still using mine. In fact the only reason I'm here today is because I was looking for another one just like it for a new coworker.

Excellent time saver

Rigga December 8, 2018

Excellent time saving multi-tool. No need for 2 sliding bevels as was the case before I first purchased one of these. Just bought a new one as my old one was showing signs of wear & tear after 20 years of hard labour. Simply set the pitch and get the seat cut and plumb cut bevel on one tool. Once the pitch is set easily read off the figure on com/jack scale and transfer to the hip/val scale to get the pitch of hip rafter. The figures on the com/jack and hip/val scales are a little confusing if you're not acquainted with the old skool feet & inches. These figures show the rise in inches per foot of run. Simple to use tool that I could not now cope without. No need for a protractor to set any bevel. Can also be used as a power saw guide when clamped to the work piece. Top tool, job done!!! makes figuring angles easy and no worrying about different angles on different pieces with the locking screw to hold your angle.

Adjustable Quicksquare worked Well

Ironchic January 31, 2017

This quicksquare worked nicely for finding the slope of a railing I'm building on an incline, but it would have been easier to place where I needed it and keep it there while tightening the nut if it had a lip on one of the edges like a regular speed square has. Still gave me the info I needed.

Great Tool for Framing Carpenters, but not for me

Markums January 7, 2019

I got this for Xmas and am impressed with its sturdy construction & functional appearance. Then, not being a framing carpenter, I started wondering what the cryptic markings such as "COM/JACK" and "HIP/VAL" meant (I figured the latter ones out). THEN I started wondering how you use it and what it was designed for, besides use as a speed square or a protractor. Surprisingly, the packaging said NOTHING about it, but did mention a manual on the stanleytools.com website. Though there was no mention of the manual on the webpage for the square, I went poking around and finally looked at the FAQs, where I... FOUND THE MANUAL AT: https://www.stanleytools.com/support/faqs?productsku=46-071 It seems like a really obscure place for it, and I would think it common sense to put a link to it right on the product page. I suggest you tell your web creator to add that link, and check your other products for the same.

Chineeeeese!

Great tool from an increasingly less great company. Made in CHINA again! Sad! No indication I could find on this page.

No User Guide, No User Service

jimster March 20, 2025

I cannot fathom why Stanley cannot bother to post a Manual and provide a link to it on the product webpage. The link that was found and posted by the reviewer under THE ILLUSIVE MANUAL now returns a blank pdf, and the file to be found at the Wayback Machine is corrupted. “The Measure of a Pro,” indeed.

Oh dear!

Jonathan October 2, 2018

I bought this to make life easier and it doesn't. It states clearly that a manual is available online, which it isn't. It's an American tool (imperial measurements only are the big clue) whose use is probably covered in American Carpentry classes BUT it is not a basic tool in the UK. After over half a Century using Carpentry tools I have no Idea how most of the markings work and neither does a friend who is a technician/lecturer in Carpentry at a local college. It is a sliding bevel that probably will be a bit more robust than a normal one and the degree markings will be helpful, BUT with a basic guide, let alone a manual, it could be a real keeper.

Quick thingy April 5, 2024

Thought I would read the manual as advertised on the product packaging. The product page says nothing available. Pretty poor really and amateurish. No sale. Whats going on here? I don't live in usa or canada. No other option in review form
