I've never really used this plane, not sure how long I've owned it. However, I decided to clean it up and put a sharp edge on the blade, WOW! This is my go to plane for bench work! You can go out and spend hard earned money on an expensive block plane, or spend a little time, sharpen it up, a love this bad boy!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I found this plane to be the right size for home owner use and built to last. It is very comfortable in the hand and uncomplicated to use. I am glad I bought it.
First the pros: 1. Affordable. 2. Good steel holds an edge. 3. Once set up, the iron is firmly in place. 4. Handy size doesn't take up a lot of space. And the cons: 1. Setting up the iron is a pain in the backside. And it has to be done every time the iron is sharpened/hone. 2. It just lacks the little fiddly bits that more expensive lanes have. I bought this when I was in dire need and while I still use it, I dread having to reset it. Overall, it is a handy tool. If not used a lot you won't need to worry too much about sharpening it. Put a decent paste wax or Renaissance Microwax on it and rust is not an issue whatsoever (all cast iron and non stainless tools need some preventative TLC).
It's a very simple plane. I have used it multiple times and have none of the issues the other reviewers have. It gets plenty sharp and holds an edge well and the tool stays together for me like it should. Only issue is the coating on the base is starting to come off after years of use
It takes cambering and sharpening the blade, adding an extra 5° on the edge for a final sharpening. The base is ground flat and comes pretty flat but the grind marks are deep and you'll be lapping the base one wet sand paper for hours to get a good sole and toe. Blade is traditional Stanley although I couldn't find the steel type in the manual, this would help significantly with choosing the proper sharpening stones when honing the edge.
Clamping wheel is smooth, shiny, and slippery. Making this piece a very nice paper weight. If some texture was to be added it would be fine. But because of this faulty design the blade will not hold true due to the wheel not being able to be tightened properly.
Do not buy this model it does not work!! The design is very poor and you will find that the blade will never stay in place. Stanley should be ashamed of this product. This is probably the worst tool I have ever owned in over 30 years of carpentry.
Kept falling apart. I'll never buy It again. I'm so disappointed
One of the worst tools I've ever used. Got two passes before the blade loosens up.
this is useless. IT CANNOT BE ADJUSTED ! total waste of money
