Finally ! The 12 minute longer theatrical version that was previously released in Full-screen on Television, Video-cassette and Laserdisc in 1983 is getting the home video treatment for the third time on Blu-ray. And for the first time EVER, it's in Wide-screen. With it you get the original theatrical version that was released in December 1979 and the 2001 Director's Edition that was previously released only on D.V.D. All 3 versions are in 4-K ULTRA. A.K.A SUPER HIGH DEFINITION. With the films you also get a ARCHIVES booklet, stickers, original press kit reproduction cards and a mini poster. I''ve pre-ordered my copy. I will also be getting the seperate releases of the other 5 ''STAR TREK'' films that are also in SUPER HIGH DEFINITION and they will also be out September 6th. That date cannot come fast enough. This first film is the ONLY film to have 3 diffrent versions while PARTS 2 and 6 have two diffrent versions. This box set ''STAR TREK PART 1-THE MOTION PICTURE THE COMPLETE ADVENTURE'' gets an astounding A .
Good selection of movies and collectibles for price.
Well, it appears Andy may be drinking too much coffee and he's half right. There are 3 versions of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in this set and why the fan base is going nuts. 1- the Theatrical Version released to theaters in 1979. 2- the TV Extended Version with many scenes added to extend the movie for commercial television (in the 4x3 format of that time period, originally in the standard def format for many scenes and previously not upgraded). 3- the Director's Version - as Paramount gave the director the money to revisit his project, upgrade it for the DVD format and complete it the way he intended without the pressures of the Theatrical Version deadlines. The Theatrical Version in 4k was released months ago, so no big deal there. The video quality for 4k is pretty good, but in my opinion, not as stunning as the Director's Version, and it's the first time the Director's Version is available in 4k, looking a little better than blu-ray quality. The TV Extended Version is what the big deal is all about. It's only been in the 4x3 full screen format and had limited video cassette (and laserdisc?) releases, but my memory is fuzzy and I could be wrong about the formats. Research it if interested in the time frame and when other work was done as there are two really reliable review sites at blu-ray.com and thedigitalbits.com. Now, the TV Extended Version is available in widescreen and upgraded but limited to the problems when something from the older days of filming is upgraded - and that's where I have a problem, as I've seen restored movies and TV shows given a lot more attention and the TV Extended Version is dull in video quality compared to the Director's Version. Paramount has made statements that this is the only way they will release the TV Extended Version, and it won't be available on blu-ray (and that seems to be true for now as the U.K. and other issues don't have it on blu-ray either), and while it's true now, the Trekkies and Trekkers paid sky high prices for this Special Edition, and looking at the sales of this sky high box set, it may be safe to assume Paramount might re-think that someday. Not everybody has a 4k player, and many who've tried to upgrade to 4k, learned the hard way that the low end players have issues, so wait for the holiday sales and watch for the Panasonic mid-line prices to go down, then try it - is what I would recommend. Walmart has been very good to me (in store) regarding those low end 4k player issues, replacing, returning, refunds, etc., and does have lower prices at times on those mid-line Panasonics. I have to admit it was good to see something I haven't seen in decades (the TV Extended Version) and finally in widescreen, even if the video quality could be so much better considering todays technological advances in restoring older programs. Here's hoping that Paramount has noticed that the Trekkies and Trekkers are still breathing and still buying, so a better restoration project may come some day!
Nice Set.. Came Well packaged. It was a little expensive, but it has major perks. The Discs are in a carboard fold out. I didn't like this. I wish the studios would at least put them in a keep case inside of the box set. The discs are hard to get out of the carboard insert. So get you a case to keep them in so they won't get damaged. Overall I like the set. It's the only way right now to get the TV version of the movie. Could have been way better packaging though.
Package was damaged. Box was creased all the way across like something heavy was sitting on top of it. Quite disappointing for a "Collector's Edition" box set. Afraid to return as next one could be worse.
