The item gives you 2 extra usb A outlets and works as expected.
I wanted to boot from this card. I have to give it 5 stars because it does everything that StarTech claims. I always want to do something different.
Documentation states power connection is optional. My experience with two of these in three separate computers indicates that the power connection is required, even in one with a 750w supply. I could not get any USB devices to work unless the power connection was in place. After doing that everything worked fine.
It does require the "optional" SATA power connector. Tried the card in two different systems. Drivers installed and all showed well. But, nothing would respond when plugged in. Not a flash drive, keyboard, or disk drive. After plugging in the SATA power connection and rebooting, everything worked as expected. Nice and fast.
Have a PC service shop and installed a half dozen of these. On the machines that had a 400W power supply, USB sticks worked, but USB2.0 and 3.0 docking stations did not. Once upgraded to a 500W power supply, a single USB dock would work on one port but could not run two docks. Once finally upgrading the PSU on each machine to 600W, both USB ports worked at the same time with USB2.0 and 3.0 docking stations. These are definitely power hungry.
Does not work for Windows 10 - no driver available from Etron. Seemed to be okay with Win 7, but quit when I updated. Included drivers do not work with Win 10, and Etron website shows none available for any of their products.
