A must need if working on electronics
I use this same unit at work, and it's great for soldering electrical components from through hole, to surface mount. I purchased this because my fiance is doing computer repair and needed something with good even heating, and temp control.
I've worked on computers for years and have always been wary of static electricity. So far no issues but this makes working on a computer safe. I'm VERY pleased with this product. This is simple, easy to use but protects our expensive purchases!
Product arrived in perfect condition. Nicely packed. Nice size for my work bench.
It would be helpful, if there were instructions on using this mat. To what should one attach the clip with the 1M Ohm resistor? Me, my PC, or an electrical ground? Does it matter what I touch first after it's attached? Calling support they said attach it to an electrical ground.
This thing will never lay flat. Curls up regardless of the instructions saying it will do so if left unrolled at room temperature. I'm using it, but I do regret buying this. Look for something else.
Find the instructions here: https://www.startech.com/en-us/faq/grounding-clip-installation Where do I attach the grounding clip (alligator clip)? The grounding clip should be attached to something that is electrically grounded to dissipate static electricity. One method is to connect the clip to a metal part of the computer case while the power supply is turned off, but plugged in to a grounded wall socket.
I work in a tech room in Alberta, a dry climate and I have static present whenever I get up from my chair. Luckily most of the computers I work on are grounded through the chassis, and static discharge doesn't damage anything. I thought I'd use this product so that I can ground myself before I handle the computers. This mat does not help in dissipating static from my body, it appears the PVC surface does not conduct electricity at all. It merely insulates the desktop and does nothing to dissipate static electricity. I do not recommend this product and I will be returning it. Startech should publish the surface resistivity of the surface to demonstrate if it's meant to be insulating or dissipative.
It has no directions, and it seems to be very flimsy. I just received it today.
There's no instructions. Which way is up? How do I use the clip to ground it? Also, it comes rolled up and you have to find something to hold it open.
