So we ordered these on Sunday the 19th when I was inspired to make per-Peppermint martinis for the holiday season. The local liquor store only had 1.75 liters of Peppermint Schnapps, and only one bottle left of that. So I realized that if I was going to buy this enormous bottle of something I never think about for ten months out of the year, I ought to make it special. So I drove around looking for little candy canes. You know, for garnish? The little ones we get as kids that are likely to be broken out of the box? Yeah II thought it would be cute to garnish peppermint martinis with that. But apparently in my area, shoppers hit the stores early and hard. No peppermint candy canes seemed left. A bit defeated, I went home with my overly large schnapps. Got onto the Walmart app, just to see when something would ship- and lo and behold, there was a two-pack of 25 mini candy canes at an in-store price with free shipping! I pressed “Purchase” before I read any further. It was not going to get here by CHristmas, the order said. So I put it out of my mind. Did your best, gave it a shot. And hey- candy cane cocktails are for any time of year, right? We'd muddle through somehow, like the song says, and have ourselves a merry little Christmas with what we have, and be grateful. Lo and behold, on the second day of the crippling freeze that hit on the 23rd, a package arrived at my door! It was the candy canes! They had arrived early! About an hour later I got an email from Walmart announcing the arrival. And there were only maybe 10 broken ones! Christmas martinis are saved! It's a lovely day in Whoville! Hans Gruber is dead!
