Very Dated
I heard good things about this online, however reading this book was a slog to go through. I have some main issues with it. Fromm claims in around pages 33-34 that same-sex relationships don't count as real love, and his universal system of love is too rigid (i.e. if I love my partner, I love all people on that same level). This book is homophobic and doesn't address situations where love may not be the best action. And for a "philosophy" book, it relies too much on the Bible to back up Fromm's claims. There are more problems I have with it, such as Fromm's stereotypical view on Motherly/Fatherly love and a lack of love in regards to nature, objects, etc, but I'll keep it brief. The last chapter is the best one by far, although the information found there could be read elsewhere. This book is not worth the read, especially in 2025.
