I am new to the straight razor group but have seen an incredible decrease in skin irritation after shaving. Over the past two months my technique has improved dramatically. This was a great razor to begin with and I highly recommend it. I am definitely done buying disposable razors.
I had been using a Dovo turtleshell and an ancestor's blade made in the late 1800's. Both shave pretty good. The Dovo, while giving a good shave, took more strokes to get there. The TI razor I got from here only needs one pass in each direction for me and results in a super-comfortable result. I think this is because the blade is noticeably heavier than is the Dovo. So, I would definitely recommend the TI over a Dovo. How I do it: 1. Hot shower 2. Art of Shaving oil 3. Art of Shaving Cream. Just a small dab right in the middle of your brush is all that is needed 4. Shave with the grain 5. Rinse with hot water 6. Re-do Steps 2-4, except shave against the grain 7. Rinse with cold. Remarkably comfortable. Great razor. Take your time learning how to shave with these. Well worth the effort and heck, it isn't costing a blade a week like a fusion does.
This is my first straight rszor and I have to say it was so smooth and close and no cuts wow! I put a little dab of art of shaving Ocean Kelp pre-shave gel and then Ocean kelp shaving cream and away I went it was like gliding down a ski slop so smooth and no cuts he he which I thought I would get for my first time shaving with this type of razor, I highly recomend this razor for looks and quality it also feels really comfortable in your hand with it's wooden handle and gold accents a 10+ in my book!
This was my first straight razor. It provides an excellent smooth shave every time. It does tarnish easily though so make sure you spend a little extra time drying it off before you put it away. The other thing I found was that the scaling is a little long, making it difficult to maintain a good grip on the razor without hitting your collar bone or neck. Overall this is a great product and I would recommend it as your first razor if you are interesting in shaving with a straight razor. I would also recommend taking it slow if you have never shaved with a straight razor or knife. if you are like me, I find it difficult to shave my dominant side with my dominant hand due to the angle so you take it slow as you get used to switching to your non-dominant hand.
The stand is good as long as there is no jarring of the cabinet or vibrations of the floor. If so, the razor will assuredly fall off and, sometimes, the brush. The barbs that retain the instruments need the be lengthened and/or put on a cant to prevent this from happening.
I bought a compact brush stand (together with a shaving brush). In the store it came with an inclined post, and I thought that that was the design. However, after bringing it home I realized that that was not the case. It must have been bent by accident. And I had to straighten it back by hand; I hope this has not added unnecessary stress to that part. The store manager did not notice this when he handed it to me, which is a little disturbing.
I had the exact same experience as one of the earlier reviews with the handle starting to swivel. I did unfortunately cut myself a few times, but have figured out how to continue to use the razor without cutting myself (although the shave takes considerably longer and the left side of my face isn't as close as the right side (I'm right handed and find that I have to use my dominant hand to ensure that it doesn't swivel). Not what I expected -- particularly given the price.
I have used your products with great satisfaction except the Three blade razor. You should sell a replacement insert for the blade holder that fell out after a couple shaves . Along with a strong glue or epoxy to hold it in . Just send the holder please!!!
It is a nicely designed piece, BUT - I don't own a single razor, and especially Art of Shaving razors, that is short enough to stay in the stand. It is now a pretty worthless decoration in the guest bathroom. The salesperson SHOULD have said something this before I bought it. I'm especially disappointed as I shop at this particular store regularly.
I've used Mach 3 for about 20 years and talked myself into getting the Black 3 Blade Razor for Christmas a couple years ago. Within 6 months the head that the blades comes out and AOS offers no replace/repair/exchange/suggest option that I could find at the store or online. I wouldn't recommend getting any handles that the head can separate from the handle.
