The innocent Chinese girl taken from her family and home, placed within the moral and unwritten code of the American west is terrifying and helplessly alone. It may be America at it's very best and it's very worst. Today the code of right and wrong is burned deep into the hearts and minds of real men and women, and of America.
This movie touched subjects that almost all movies don't mention, like when Robert Duvall had to go to the bathroom outside. Or when they met up with a guy with some sickness, they just shot him. The question is, is this a true story? Truely a keeper of a movie.
This is based on a true story. Thomas Haden Church, whom I loved in the comedy TV show "WINGS", is excellent in this. I guess since he actually owns a ranch that he works in real life... This makes him more natural playing the part. The movie storyline itself started off alittle slow. But, it gets really good.
Robert Duvall at his best. I watched the special features about this movie. Duvall himself said," the third in his western trilogy. Lonesome Dove, Open Range, and now this one. This series takes you back to a time when a six gun was the only law, and men were real men. Acting was great, plot was outstanding. Overall Great Series. There should be more like this one.
A good westeren with Duval
I was raised in watching many Western movies, so I truly wish that many more great ones were produced! I respect Robert Duvall's acting talents and I always liked Thomas Haden Church as the mechanic in "Wings"! Knowin' that he owns a ranch in his native Texas made it pretty evident that he's a good rider! His natural dialect worked well and his character in this film is memorable..I thought. The story is an unusual one, but it IS a (mostly) factual story, as the ending reveals. The scenes & additional characters are strong, the country-side is beautiful & I honestly thought that Mr. Duvall was as great in his portrail of this character as he was as "Gus" in "Lonesome Dove"!!! *(YOU will need to see if you agree, of course!). Overall, I REALLY enjoyed it enough to purchase right away for our own collection, plus, I also bought one as a gift to add to our adult Son's Classic Western DVD collection!! * PLEASE, BE AWARE THAT ADULT LANGUAGE ABOUNDS THROUGHOUT THE FILM, so it's best watched in proper company!!* IF you're a true-blue Western film lover, THIS one really needs to be in your video library! There's enough excitement in this movie to please the Guys and the Women will appreciate how two Cattlemen (unintentionally) carry, teach them English, protect & care for a small group of young Girls who can't speak English and (as the Cowboys discover) they were "bought"! They all make their way through a not-so-friendly mining town & rugged country! I truly doubt that you'll be disappointed with this film. I place it among the Best of our collection to enjoy for many years to come!!
Broken Trail is about an aging cowboy and his nephew transporting 500 horses from Oregon to Wyoming. Along the way they rescue 5 young Chinese girls from a slave trader. It is a story of good vs evil. Robert Duval's acting reminded me of his roll in Lonesome Dove (one of the greatest western mini series of all time). Broken Trail is a three hour mini series that is remarkable.
Fantastic plot and acting
I had looked for this movie for a long time. Was very excited to find it on Wal-mart.com and the price was really good.
Very good, it is a 2 part movie. Good for a rain day to watch.
