I've had a similar style collar for about 10 years and it works GREAT and is still in great condition after all this time. The miracle collar did nothing for my horse but this is game changing! My horse will crib if it's too loose but if fits correctly it works perfectly. I've never seen my horse crib with it on and she's a really bad ex racehorse cribber.
This is the only cribbing collar that has worked on my guy. I wasn't sure about it when I first put it on him but it's worked wonders. He's the master of destroying literally everything (5 year old mischief maker) but somehow this has survived for 9 months so far. I do have a few notes and tricks for those that are trying to decide what's best, that make also help clarify some reviews! 1. Like all leather, this takes a minute to break in. It didn't work for the first day or so but the leather then formed to my guy's neck and BAM! It started working perfectly. 2. This is quality leather so it WILL stretch. Just keep an eye on it and punch more holes if you need to. 3. It seems alarmingly tight because of the block but believe me, it's not. For my guy at least, I thought I had it tight but he'd flip the block to the top of his neck when playing. I tightened it up more and it didn't bother him a bit - it's comfortable and doesn't rub under his neck. I can't even take it off before he falls asleep with it. 4. It'll likely rub off some of their mane at the top but I'll take that over sucking in air any day 5. Bonus: All the other horses are super envious of his accessories. He looks fab.
I have had this collar for about 4 years. This works great and my ex- racehorse no longer cribs. I used the miracle collar before this one, but the super tight fit, rubbing and marks it left were awful even with padding and fleece. The dare collar works great and is much looser. Construction and leather are top notch.
Very glad to see that Smartpak carries this collar now. I still have mine from my first horse who was a dedicated cribber. It was the only thing that came close to working on him, and unlike every other collar I used on him, it did not leave gaping, bleeding wounds on his neck due to rubs from constant wear. I had the fleece cover for it too, and would only put it on when he'd get the occasional bald spot to allow it time to heal, and then take it off again, as it was quite substantial and fluffy. He would get it really sweaty and gross and I didn't want it wearing out with repeated trips to the washer. The leather of the collar is nice and thick and cleaned up well with tack soap. I've recommended this to everyone I know who has a cribber. Though my boy is no longer with me and my current horse is not a cribber, I've held onto this as it's a really great collar, and who knows, I may end up with a cribber again in the future.
This fella just won't give up. I bought this collar about 2 years ago, put it on him with only moderate results. After 2-3 weeks he was only cribbing about half as much as he was before. I decided to take it up one more notch. Bingo!! It was hard to do but without we just can't keep weight on him as he spends too much time cribbing, if we can't keep weight on we can't ride him. I do feel bad for him when he has to wear it but if it's not tight, he won't stop. I have to put it on him 2-3 times a year, for 4-6 weeks at a time. All is good, and then one day you look out and see him sucking on fence posts. I found him cribbing this morning, put the collar on him, which reminded me to write this review.
This collar works, but adjusting it takes time. I had to tighten it way more than i expected. to work it needs to be very snug, it will not rub, as it will not be moving. If it moves its too loose. I had to go 5 holes up on each side for a 16.2 h dutch warmblood. But she eats and sleeps fine. Took it off after several days of wearing and no rubbing and she is a very sensitive horse. But you have to be patient and observe your horse and tighten it up till it works. I always give my horse a treat when I put it on and when I take it off so that she waits.
I purchased this cribbing collar about a month ago. First time I have ever had a need in over 50 yes owning horses. I was concerned about whether or not it would work. Im happy to report this collar works very well and has stopped my horse from cribbing.
This works. I have the cribber of the century. I tried other collars and gave up. The leather would stretch and he was back to cribbing. My trainer noticed another horse stopped cribbing with this collar and tried it on my pony and bam! it worked! I ordered my own and am so grateful. I cannot rave enough. It appears stiff at first. It definitely got softer in a short time. If you want the problem over, look no further!!
I found myself dealing with a cribber for the first time. He was doing a number on my wood fencing pretty quickly. I decided to go with this Dare collar as I liked that hopefully it wouldn't need to be as tight as others, it's padded, and only one strap. It works! I watched him closely the first day. There was twice I saw he did get his head up and teeth on the wood, but was not able to get his neck in position and suck wind. He pretty quickly gave up and I haven't seen him try since! He seems pretty comfortable wearing it. Only 48 hours in, but so far no rubs.
High quality leather and strongly made. However since my mare is more of a wind sucker (will place top teeth on the stall bar and suck in air) than a true cribber, this doesn't really stop her. It has rubbed her mane a little bit despite the sheepskin cover.
