Doobie Brothers, a hard habit to break.
What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, released in 1974, is the third of 3 great early Doobie Brothers albums. It followed 1972's equally impressive Toulouse Street and the classic The Captain and Me from 1973. Vices has 2 well known hits, the iconic Black Water and very popular Another Park, Another Sunday that received much airplay in the 70s and are still heard on Classic Rock stations today. But the strengths of this disc are the 10 other songs that feature pop, heavier rock, blues, country, jazz (funk?) and even progressive influences. The Memphis Horns add a lot to the 3 songs they are featured on and almost everything on this album besides the 2 hits could be considered hidden gems that showcase the very recognizable Doobies sound from this period of the band before they morphed into a different style with Michael McDonald at the helm. If you're a Doobie Brothers fan or just enjoy listening to great music from the 70s, this one is a good place to start but it could prove to be habit forming.
