Retro Flash

Becki May 6, 2025

While the show didn't last long, I really enjoyed the pilot episode. The rest of the season wasn't as good, but you could see where most of the budget went. Classic retro show I haven't seen since it originally aired on TV.

The First Run

victor4782 June 2, 2023

Growing up, I was always exposed to comic book mediums from movies to TV shows from the 1970s to the 1990s. One night of channel surfing and I found this series. I was hooked on Danny Elfman's rousing score but despite my interest, I could only catch one episode before it was canceled, and these were the days of TV only releasing a few video tapings on VHS tapes so I couldn't catch the whole series. Thankfully the creation of DVDs makes it possible to do that very thing. 1991. Barry Allen is a police scientist working for the Central City Police Department, living a modest life while being overshadowed by his more successful veteran cop father and elite older brother on the force. But one night Barry is struck by lightning in his laboratory and doused with chemicals that alter his body chemistry turning him into a man that can travel at great speed. With the help of a fellow scientist in Dr. Tina McGee, Barry uses his abilities wearing a special suit that protects him as he protects his city as the superhero the Flash. John Wesley Shipp is excellent as Barry Allen/The Flash. I realize that there was some mild controversy as comic book fans were seeing the second version of the Flash on screen while the comic book incarnation at the time was Wally West. But I enjoyed Shipp's performance as the confident, strong, and funny superhero. The same with Amanda Pays as Tina McGee. But watching this show was similar to a time capsule of some great talent like Angela Bassett, Bryan Cranston, Clifton Collins, Denise Crosby, Jeri Ryan, Richard Burgi, Emmet Walsh, Richard Belzer, Jonathan Brandeis, and the great Mark Hamill. As well as comic book writers Howard Chaykin and John Francis Moore who wrote the comic book at the time. This was the 1990s so the special effects and stories, while a product of the era, stand the test of time. This was a good DVD set; I just wish it was given the Blu-ray treatment like other DC Comic book shows and movies.
