The Godfather (4K Ultra HD + Digital Copy)

I got this 4k some months back around Black Friday and it is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen in 2160p (and I have seen tons of movies). I figured I would take the plunge with the 4k of The Godfather after thinking it over for some time since it was on sale for about $15, and I can say with certainty that I made the right call. I had always wanted to see these movies growing up since I had heard about them nonstop as a kid, I finally got to see them many years later when I picked up the trilogy on Blu-Ray for $10 (man oh man, those were the days of cheap movies). I loved the movies (except for III which I haven't re-watched like the other ones), and even though I didn't know or care much about picture quality all those years ago, I could tell that these movies looked really nice. Come to find out all of these years later that there was a yellowish filter put over some versions of The Godfather movies (including the Blu-Ray I owned). This brings me to the 4k which looks different not only because it is significantly higher quality, but also, and more importantly, because that filter was removed from this restoration of the films in place of a natural look that more closely resembles the original film when it was first released. This is not to talk bad on the previous restoration, but rather to highlight how incredibly well done this 4k is, which these movies are very much deserving of. If you haven't seen the movies before, get them (on sale, if you can wait), if you have seen them before in any other resolution that's less than 4k, get this release. P.S. I don't know if they are still shipping the 4ks of these movies with the slipcovers, but when I ordered Part I and II, both came with their slipcovers.

Almost everyone has seen this movie. Most of us just wanted to have a 4k version and this one might disappoint those looking for lots of extras. It has very little. Commentary by the director and that's it. But I wanted to get it for the quality of the video and audio. Mostly it is a hugely successful, although there were a few times when the coloring seemed a bit off. That's just my opinion. Still looks incredible. Audio is fine and you do get a digital copy of the film. If you love this film and you don't mind the lack of many extras then this is for you. And a very fair price, too.

Incredible film restored in 4K. Looks beautiful on my OLED. Wish it had more special features with the film but I got this film at an incredible sale price so I can't complain.

If you are someone building a reasonably representative collection of great filmography on disc media, you would have to include this one. In many ways The Godfather is a watershed. Combining the highest artistic presentation while appealing to the general public with great actors both new and old, a fantastically told story with plenty of family drama, betrayal, and a heavy dose of bloody violence. It introduced the modern mafia movie and led to the likes of Part II of the franchise, The Goodfellas, Casino and more. Acknowledging the greatness of the film is one thing but then trying to transfer it to the best possible presentation in the home is another. In this endeavor Coppola and his restoration team hit a home run, grand slam and triple crown all in one. The 4K remastering is just stunning. Especially with the Dolby Vision version. 35mm film grain is beautifully present but not overwhelming. Details like clothing texture, gleam of polished paint on the classic cars, lack of black crush and wonderful color timing. Any scenes with bloodshed take on true gruesomeness. Dialog is clear and the music is full without distortion with the lossless 5.1 soundtrack. There is an intro and a full movie commentary with Coppola but no additional special features for these solo releases of the three films. You'll need to acquire the full 5 disc set of all three movies to get the full special features including new documentaries, etc. Still, if you want the best presentation of this classic movie as a solo purchase, you can do no better than adding this disc to your collection. A true must buy!

This is just the first movie but really it should be sold only as a bundle with the entire triology at this point. this version of the movie released in 4k dc should never have existed without the other 2.
