These sharp knives are great for small hands. I'm a woman with small hands and have trouble finding tools small enough for comfort and easy use. These fit fine. The block is sturdy on my kitchen counter. I'm a knife novice, so I appreciate the pictures on the side of the box telling me which knife does what. I used the 5 inch utility knife to cut thru a raw beef chuck roast to cut it in to smaller hunks and it was like slicing thru air. Amazing.
I am very pleased with the quality and beauty of this knife set. The heft of the handles and their ergonomic shape makes using the various utility knives so easy and productive! The steak knives' teal-colored handles match perfectly the teal stripe around my dinnerware pieces, and the counter-worthy wood block holder is also beautifully made. I am very, very pleased with this set and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quality set of knives.
I had the opportunity to try this very attractive set of block and knives. The block is a very handsome and nicely stained and the knife handles, though plastic, are matching color, in my case, "Periwinkle." In addition to the typical block complement of Scissor, Butcher (8 in), Bread, Carving (5 in), Boning, Paring, and (6) Steak Knives, the set also includes a 6 in Santoku Knife. The latter is a nice addition that I haven't seen much. The blades are all full tang and riveted. The handles are a solid, quality plastic, similar to that found in higher end knifes. Of course, knives are a practical tool and the real test comes in their utility and comfort. Sharpness, balance, and heft play essential roles, here. The stainless steel blades come razor sharp. I haven't had them long enough to know how long the edges will hold true, but it's nice to have a set be ready for use. The instructions suggest to steel (not included) sharpen after each use. Sometimes, it's worth purchasing a block set just for the Steak Knife Set. Although the knives felt a bit light, I liked the combined serrated/plain blade that allows you to cut easily through different foods. I thought the Steak Knives would be dishwasher safe, since the handles are plastic (I would never machine wash wood handles or the larger knives) and was a little disappointed that the manufacturer recommends against that. I found the Butcher and Carving well balanced, with the center around where the handle ends. The Paring was a little off for me, but that may not patter as much, since the entire handle likely rests within your hand. The Butcher was lighter than my high-end knife set, but most of the other knives were lighter. This is not necessarily a negative, just a comfort preference and views will vary. Slicing and chopping with the Butcher and Carving knives were a pleasure. They sliced through onions, vegetables, etc. with ease. For tomatoes, I use a bread knife, as its serrated edge works best. I prefer this blade to be very thin and I found the Pioneer Wife blade a bit thick, but it sliced evenly and quickly, without squashing the tomato. I was surprised to find that the Carving also sliced well through the tomatoes, and then realized it was serrated at the top edge and plain below. This is a nice feature, shared by the Steak knives. It's very useful to have a Scissor within easy reach, so I was pleased to see one in the block. However, I was surprised that it wouldn't cut through a bag of salad, then realizing that the curved handle is likely designed to cut poultry. Not having a chicken or turkey ready, I wasn't able to test that, but it seems useful if you roast poultry a lot. The carved Boning is likely to assist here. My experience is that a straight Boning is sharper and does better with meats and tough cuts, but a curved one helps with raw chicken or when cutting down the bone. It seems to me that the Pioneer Woman cooks a lot of poultry or chicken-based dishes, so maybe these tools fit with that theme. If you don't roast a lot of chicken, it might be worth swapping out the Scissors for straight pair. All in all, this is a lovely set that you will be proud to display as well as use. It includes an excellent, razor sharp complement of knives that will make food prep a pleasure. The inclusion of a Santoku Knife is a nice addition and the innovated blades seem like a nice idea.
As a long time cook I know there are no greater tools in my kitchen than a good set of knives. This set from Pioneer Woman is not only pretty but very functional. The knife block is a lovely wood blend and the red handled knives are just the right accessory to my red and black rustic decor. The knives themselves are sturdy, well made and comfortable in my hand. There is a nice selection too of knives which would meet most of my chopping, slicing, peeling and dicing needs. There is also a pair of hefty scissors perfect for cutting through poultry and vegetables. All in all I think this set of knives would be immensely productive for any cook of every skill level all wrapped up in a pretty display on a kitchen counter.
The first thing I noticed is that the blade steel extends all the way through the handle of this set of knives. This is a sign of high quality construction! The variety of knife sizes and functions is nice with symbols on the handle for quick identification. The block is well designed and solidly built for blade protection and storage. This set even includes a pair of kitchen shears that we use almost daily. Another in a long line of high quality products from the “Pioneer Woman” brand! We use and proudly display many of their products in our kitchen.
I must admit that I was a little apprehensive about these knives at first, but I was so wrong! They are very sharp, and easy to resharpen. They're easy to clean (hand wash only). They're light, and the handle feels really good to the hand while using. The block is excellent quality. I love the designs. I only wish there were a built in sharpener. 10/10 would recommend!
This is a nice set for the price but I've got 30 year old Cutco knives that I prefer using over these. These are extremely high maintenance. The instructions say to hand wash thoroughly in hot water using a mild soap or detergent and non-abrasive sponge. Rinse in clean, hot water and towel dry immediately to prevent blades from corrosion. Automatic dishwashers are not recommended as the heat and detergent can damage or stain the blades. The instructions also say to not allow the cutlery to soak in water and do not allow acidic or salty foods and liquids to sit on the blades after use. Allowing these types of substances to sit on the blades can cause staining. Should the blades show signs of staining, use a non-abrasive metal polish to remove the stains. They recommend using a sharpening steel between each use. For me this is too much work for kitchen utinsels. I like the smooth edge of the paring knife. It is very sharp. However I do not like the fine serated edge of the 5" utility knife. I attached a picture of it next to my Cutco knife which has a wider serated edge and cuts much easier. The scissors are a good heavy product. It's a nice looking set. The handles are comfortable to work with. The block is nice. However if you are looking for a high quality set without much up keep I would not recommend this one.
The set is lovely and seems to be well-made. If you enjoy putting things in the dishwasher so that they get cleaned, you may not like this particular set, as it is handwash only. I have had it less than a week and have been able to use most of the knives and the scissors, and they all work great. Time will tell if they last. It is made in China.
I've tried to like this knife and block set but I just don't. First of all the set looks okay just sitting on the counter, although the block is not attractive at all like the one pictured on the box. Mismatched, scrap wood look with a stain blob on the side. As far as the knives, they are all clunky, thick bladed, and too heavy, not well balanced, and a chore to try to cut anything with precision. The kitchen shears are very uncomfortable to work with because they are large, heavy and the handles are squarish, which causes an uncomfortable edge to hold in the hand. On a positive note, the whole knife set survived the top rack of the dish washer. I don't like that these knives are hand wash since the possibility of contamination is not eliminated, and the existing danger of injury from cuts by hand washing is ever present.
I've had these knifes for 2 weeks. I don't have a dishwasher and wouldn't put them in there if I did have, always wash and dry them immediately after use The knifes are never submerged in water and the handles are already splitting. I am shocked for such a well known brand the quality is this bad.
