I am an Activity Director in a senior retirement community and my residents loved this craft! Some of us stained the wood, some painted and one left it as it came. The price was great. The quality was great. They all turned out beautiful. Absolutely no complaints.
My small AP class made these as a fun Friday math project. They made one for themselves and one for their in school mentor. The mentor thought the art teacher had made them. It was a great lesson in how a very small gift, a little of your time can make an adult's (or child's) day. I only have 7 kids and this was a breeze to do.
I have been programming a day camp for 16 years and we have used the tile craft for all of the years. I have young adults that once were in the camp tell me often that they STILL have their coasters. All ages enjoy this project because it is so easy--you can embellish as you wish and they ALWAYS look nice!!!
The coasters were a wonderful craft to do together with friends. Residents had a great time choosing the tiles too use and painting/staining the boarder to their liking. Some residents were giving them away as gifts, others I have seen using them in their rooms. Had alot of positive feedback from families on this one.
I purchased these for my 7th grade history classes while we were studying the Byzantine Empire, during which time mosaics were very popular. Mosaic project fit in well with our curriculum, and the students had fun making the coasters. I ordered extra sets just to have extra tiles on hand, because certain colors go quickly. We left the frames unfinished, and I later sprayed them with an acrylic fixative. I wouldn't use them as coasters, but as decorative objects. 7th graders easily completed the project in a class period.
i read the reviews before i bought so i knew there may be some difficulty in fitting the tiles in the space...i am a camp director and my staff all made a sample prior to camp with own children...a couple went together with ease and others just required trying different tiles in order to make them fit in the rounded corners..we found that the younger scouts didn't quite understand that turning a tile or exchanging would make a difference...we ended up using an exacto knife and making the opening bigger for the youth...for 300 campers it took a little prep work, but an amazing end result the campers were all pleased and the ability for them to be creative in their designs was great! children were able to finish in the 40 minutes we gave them
This craft kit is great. The kids were really creative with their tile designs. It's easy to do once you figure out where to put the glue (you have to attach the base to the frame). My only critique is that the frame is misleading in the photo--the wood is not that color, it's the basic plain, unfinished, light colored wood.
My students and I loved this project. It was fun to make and looks very attractive when finished. I was slightly disappointed with the fact that there were not more of each color of tile. Most of my children wanted to make a particular pattern with the tiles and we ran out of the most popular colors. The finished product looks beautiful and I was tempted to make a set for myself to use at home! Some of the wooden frames were slightly misshapen, but most of the children did not mind.
I was doing with project as a christmas gift from my 7/8th grade students to their parents. The kids were very excited about the project until they started fitting the tiles into the frames. The tiles are cut as squares, but the frame that they fit into has rounded corners. It took a long time for my students to sand down the tiles with the sandpaper. I also had the students add stain to the wood prior to gluing in the tiles. The coasters themselves turned out very nice, but there were many very frustrated students in my classroom!
The wood had to be trimed before the tiles could be fitted, which was very hard for a child to do. So the project wasn't that easy to do because of it. This was a craft for VBS and the 5th & 6th graders couldn't get them to fit. Not happy with the results.
