Love the way the leathers felt, but unfortunately, they are too long. If you are a petite rider, be aware that you probably need the shortest length. Because of the extra width, punching extra holes will not help. I bought the 54” because that's what my current leathers are. I can use these for flat work on the last hole, but they will not adjust short enough for jumping. (I'm 5'1”.)
I am a dressage rider and I have these on my dressage saddle! I use them daily. Every once and awhile, I go on a trail ride where I have to dismount, truck through mud/water etc so I have another saddle I use that has normal leathers. You don't realize how much you love them until they are gone. My knees were killing me after my ride the other day and it drove me nuts I felt them under my leg. These keep my leg stable and secure. They do all of the hard work for you! I am a petite person and ordered the 54" I am considering buying a pair for my other saddle too.
I am 5'0” with a 27” inseam so very petite and the 48” are perfect. I can shorten them enough for XC (Hole 8) and lengthen enough for a balanced seat ride on the flat (Hole 6).They feel like I'm riding without stirrups, with stirrups if that makes sense! The leathers “disappear” under your leg and I felt very secure and comfortable. These replace my 6-year-old, child-length (lol) Stübben leathers that were getting worn out. These new ones are superior and I'd highly recommend them especially if you're short! *****
I actually noticed a difference in my leg position after only one ride. It seemed a bit more stable. My pelvis rotates, so leg position can be very hard for me maintain.
Kept hearing people talk about the stirrup leathers and how amazing they were. Felt a difference in stirrup stability when using them, however the difference they made when used in conjunction with the MDC Ultimate Stirrups made the leg feel rock solid. My leg doesn't even move while rehabing and training horses at a local rescue. Big con for me was the sizing... It needs to be redone. I ride in a 58-60" stirrup leather in almost all brands (I'm not very tall - 5'5", I just enjoy riding with a long leg). I got the size 60" originally and it was TOO long. It needed 3-4 more holes added to make it the correct sizing. I ended up returning for 54" and they are too short! Extremely frustrating when buying "mid-higher end" stirrups and you feel like you have to punch holes almost instantly after purchase. I have to ride with the extra tail under my leg since it's not long until to reach the saddle leather keeper. So far I have not had rubbing issues at the stirrup bar, but its a concern. I have noticed a small amount of rub towards the stirrup iron. TSF needs to either increase the pre-fab holes in the current leathers or create a size 56". Attached are photos of the stirrups on the same hole with a 14.3 Appy pony cross (Princess Annie) and a 15.3 OTTB (Dewdrops Heart) at Saving Horses Inc.
I have had these since September. While I really like the way they feel, I noticed today while cleaning my saddle the outer leather is starting to peel apart. I ride 2-3 horses three or four days a week. Really disappointing for $140 leathers.
I like the design of these leathers. They are super comfortable against my calves and work great for stabilizing my leg. Like the other reviewers said, they are very hard to adjust. I needed to punch new holes and the design doesn't really allow for that. Also, after having them for only 3-4 months they are already starting to peel. Super disappointing.
This is my 3rd set of these leathers and my second set of 48 inch. I had another set for 3 years before they wore out. At first I thought this set was defective, but now I see other reviews noting the same issue. There are 14 holes, but you can't shorten past hole 9 - the wide front leather is too long and prohibits shortening. (See photos). My old 48" didn't have this problem that I noticed, but I always jumped on 8. In addition, the leather quality is poor now. In less than 4 months they have stretched out enough that I need to be on 10, so they no longer work for jumping. They aren't even getting heavy use as I jump once a week in winter. I can tell a difference compared to my dressage version that is 3 years old. Very disappointing since I have knee problem and these were helpful with the pressure on my later ligaments.
Had to return. Unfortunately the 48" leathers cannot actually be ridden in on a hole shorter than hole#8 or so, since the wide portion / "front" of the stirrup leather is cut so that it is too long for a shorter length to be used. The stirrup cannot run once it hits the seam for the connection of the wide portion to the standard leather, and that is when you're on hole 7 or 8. Disappointed, as my 54" Millbrook Leathers have stretched out and I'm at the shortest possible hole of those. But can't get short enough in the Total Saddle Fit 48" pair. Hope TSF will fix this issue so I can replace my leathers.
I absolutely love the concept of these leathers and they keep my leg super stable however they ruined the flaps on my very expensive dressage saddle. Wish the leather was a bit softer and better quality.
