I have always Best Friend grazing muzzles with the v-strap in front. My horse keeps eating through the back of the muzzle so it's expensive to keep him muzzled. The Easy Breathe is roughly half the price of my previous muzzles and is of equal quality or better. Much to my surprise it has a v-strap in front. The size of the opening is bigger, which I like. So far it seems that the opening is less frustrating for my horse so I'm hoping he won't eat through the back. My horse is a fjord and is a ferocious eater!
As I have Connemara/TB's who cannot have free access to grass during the spring and summer months, a grazing muzzle allows them to at least walk around and eat limited amounts. The Tough 1 muzzle they have not yet been able to wear through in over a year of us. Plus with the large holes for the nostrils, there is less condensation inside the muzzle and in my mind I think should make the time wearing the muzzle more comfortable/less stressful.
Wish I'd known you carry these! I just ordered one this weekend because my old one is wearing out. My saddlebred/arab mare lives in hers 24/7 to attempt to control her intake. This is the best one I've used; lasts for a long time and totally adjustable. Great product!
Last summer I tried a grazing muzzle supposedly super-tough, yet open enough to allow some grazing. (My first grazing muzzle, recommended by the stable people.) My guy destroyed it in three hours of continual rubbing. I did not replace, for I thought I would be wasting more money. But this year I decided to try again, but with a different brand. It has now been three weeks, and he hasn't broken it! He is grazing, but not getting fat. From the look of it, it should last through the summer. Amazing. He has some rub spots on his skin, but nothing serious. They are a small price to prevent foundering and colic. I am delighted!
I moved to the Bluegrass of Kentucky from the ARID no grass beautiful state of Colorado. I knew the grass would be an issue for my horses, but they all turned into Thelwell ponies before the grass even came up! So, the poor fatty's have to live in grazing muzzles. The bigger air holes help with breathing especially when it is hot. Some reviews commented on problems with keeping them on, and I use a broodmare leather neckstrap and a small piece of baling twine to tie it to the top of the muzzle and it is Houdini horse proof!
I bought these for both of my horses as well as for one of my mini donks, all who need to have their grazing restricted. All three seem to be much happier wearing these because their breathing is not restricted and none of them try to "scrape" them off. These muzzles have multiple adjustment points so getting a good fit is simple. I've had no face rub issues at all. Love the sewn in ring underneath for attaching a lead. The only thing I would change is to make the "grazing hole" smaller like they are on the basket style muzzles. The rectangular hole on these muzzles does allow for more grass to be consumed (but it's way better than no muzzle at all). I will buy these again when they wear out.
As an owner of several fat horses, I have had a lot of experience with various makes of grazing muzzles. I thought this one might be an improvement because of the nostril openings. However, the openings are too low on the muzzle to meet the horse's nostrils. To make the nostril openings actually be at the nostrils, you must crank the muzzle up so high that the horse's lips stay in constant contact with the plastic base of the muzzle. Additionally the whole "basket" of the muzzle could probably use another inch of height to reduce the horse's ability to rub it off on the nearest fence post. The velcro closure on the crown piece is not really ideal for this application. The outside velcro piece is opened easily when the horse rolls and quickly becomes clogged with grass and dirt. The best feature of the muzzle is the bright orange color --easy to find when the horse leaves it somewhere in the pasture.
Used the horse size muzzle on two quarter horses for 4 turnouts that ranged between 3 - 5 horses. Adjusted both so that there was approximately 1 inch from tip of nose to grazing muzzle and I could get 4 fingers on side. Both horses had sores after 2 turn out. A smart pak you tube video recommended using moleskin, fleece, or duct tape. Tried moleskin and duct tape on areas of muzzle that were rubbing. The pictures were taken after the 4th turnout
Bought this for my elderly mare. Grass is finally coming in so put it on her yesterday. In one turnout session, the padding over the nose is worn through. It's only a matter of time before it starts rubbing her raw. I wish I had not wasted my time/money on this very sub-par, low quality muzzle. Buy something else!
There was an extra strap sewn on the front. I don't know what it was for but certainly not to have go across the horses face. Also, the whole was so large, it would have not limited grazing in any way. I sent them back.
