** Please note: SPOILER ALERT for this review/summary** Whenever you see "Criterion Collection", PLEASE pay attention. There is a very good reason for this. Any film from films are part of one of the greatest collections any company in Hollywood has put together. To truly understand this film, you almost have to have "come of age in the late 1960's or early 1970's. Director Monte Hellman only made a select few films in his career; I should have written "has made", since he recently came out with a new film. This is after an absence of over 40 years. There are only half a dozen members of the cast in this film, and none of their characters have names, per se. Also, these guys were at the pinnacle (or on the way up) to have huge careers. For example, 23 year old Neil Young (of "Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young fame") is "The Driver"; Dennis Wilson (of "The Beach Boys" fame" is "The Mechanic"; the venerable cult actor Warren Oates drives "The GTO". There is an interesting (and tragic) bit of trivia about Laurie Bird, who was chosen from over 500 young girls and landed the role in the film. Her character was a young "hippie" ,in which she is known (of course) "The Girl". "the Girl". She had never made a film before. A cute and truly nice young girl, she only made 2 more films: "The Cockfighter" by Monte Hellman again, and 1 of Woody Allen's greatest: "Annie Hall" in 1977. It was a small role; she played Paul Simon's girlfriend. However, she met Simon's partner, Art Garfunkel and she became his girlfriend. She had come a long way from Long Island, NY to being the girlfriend of 1 of the most successful duos in folk/pop history, living in his beautiful Manhattan penthouse. She decided to quit acting, and became a photographer. She took Garfunkel's picture for the cover of his 1978 album "Watermark". Tragically, she committed suicide in his apartment on June 15th, 1979. Garfunkel; she was only 25 years old. Garfunkel was devastated, and dedicated his next album "Scissors Cut" to Laurie, later that year. On the back cover, there is a partial picture of her. He also wrote a poem, "Still Water" trying to deal with her death. My apologies for straying off the subject; I did so because it is such a small cast, and I wanted to. So basically, the 2 young guys (Neil Young and Dennis Wilson) drive around the country drag racing people in their over powered muscle car, a 1955 Chevy. It is a really, really fast car. They meet up with Warren Oates, who has a brand spanking new Pontiac GTO; he thinks he can beat anyone. Of course (like everyone else),he underestimates them, and they blow him away in a drag race. It is a really odd film, but at the same time, it is very realistic of how times were back then. They decide to race for the titles to their cars. The way they do it is each of them put their titles (called pink slips back then) into an envelope and mail it "general delivery" to the main Post Office in Washington, DC. That means it will be held by the postmaster for whichever car arrives first. I believe they are in Las Vegas (or thereabouts) when they meet up, and the film becomes about this pretty wild cross country racing road trip. It is terrific; especially Warren Oates. He plays a compulsive liar. Since he is driving alone, he picks up hitchhikers along the way to keep him awake. He is also taking drugs to stay awake. He comes up with some hilarious bold faced lies. My favorite part is when he picks up a hitchhiker in the rain, (played by the wonderful character actor) Harry Dean Stanton, who is immortalized in the film "Alien" about 12 years later. Stanton is gay, and puts his hand on Warren Oates leg. Oates freaks out, pulls a gun on him and kicks him out of his car in a driving thunderstorm. To be honest, I forget the last 1/3 or so, but please know this film is all about the trip and the wild things which occur during it that make this such a classic film. Do not miss this one, people.
The fans of cars on TV highly rate it for portraying the street racing culture.
