First time using this past weekend. Excellent pole. Caught the most fish out of all the guys. Never thought I’d accomplish that with the seasoned fishermen I went with. Maybe it was luck, maybe not. Held up very well. I would highly recommend this pole.

Amazing combo for the price!

Mike January 1, 2026

I freaking love this setup for the money! I ended up buying two of them. One for my daughter who goes out into the bay fishing with me. I ended up giving the cork handle some contour and sealing both of the rod handles up. It has caught many fish. Great quality for the price. Would totally recommend these combos.

Absolute beast of a rod. 20 pounds of drag, smooth as silk operation, good line lay, this rod and reel combo is great for north Florida inshore fishing. At this price its an absolute steal. Honestly as good if not better than my Penn Pursuit IV. sensitive tip but strong enough to handle Redfish, Black Drum, Catfish, etc. Currently own 3, gave one as a gift. 20lb braid makes this combo strong enough to handle whatever bites and get it on the boat.

Value for Money

anonymous October 15, 2025

Bought 2 of these combos for the rods, paired them with a Shimano Nasci 3000 and Shimano Nexave 3000, these things are beasts, perfect for inshore saltwater trout and flounder. Definitely worth the money compared to the inshore select rods from Ugly Stik at $72.00 a piece.

Good Rod / Not So Good Reel

Anonymous November 23, 2025

Not a terrible rod at all, I use it with heavier bass lures and some light catfishing. I was not impressed with the reel at all, replaced it with a Daiwa almost immediately. But for this price, it’s still a great value for the rod alone.

Disappointing, doesn't match photos/description

Robert October 14, 2025

The rod's fit and finish aren't great. There's glue squeezed out from where the cork handles were attached. It is one piece and reasonably sturdy for a medium power rod, which is nice. Intercoastal used to be a semi-premium brand but now it's, by all appearances, a GX2 with a cheap cork handle. A couple of the guides arrived a little bent but were easily straightened. All of the guides have single feet instead of double like in the pictures. The reel superficially resembles nicer Ugly Stik reels but is very cheaply made even for a walmart combo. The body is all plastic. Even the handle is plastic. All the screws are a matte finish that LOOKS like stainless, but they are very magnetic and so appear to be carbon steel that will rust quickly. The only stainless part on the reel is the extremely flimsy bail wire. The nut that holds the rotor on came installed upside down. The drag came dry as a bone and the drag washers (which are just zinc coated carbon steel) came RUSTED SOLID to the drag washers. It has two bearings, one real one and one instant anti-reverse, the latter being mostly plastic. The drag washers are tiny as is the spool shaft. If the drag somehow does 24lbs as advertised, the rest of the reel isn't up to it. The whole thing is undersized for a 5000 reel. In many ways this reel is inferior to the one that comes with the white ugly stik "Saltwater" combo (which is also not a real salt water reel). It is also a 4.9 gear ratio, not 5.1 as advertised. Someone compared the reel to a Penn Pursuit IV. They aren't in the same league. The Pursuit IV 5000 is literally twice the size of the Ugly Stik combo 5000 reel, with no carbon steel parts to rust and a machined aluminum handle. I would bet my Pursuit IV 2500 is much stronger than Ugly Stik's plastic pos in the 5000 size. It is annoying that you have to remove the rotor and six screws to get into the case. But otherwise it's a simple design that's easy to clean and maintain. Everything fits together nicely and it seems to be reasonably tight. It's pretty smooth (but all reels are these days). TLDR: On sale the combo is a decent value. Very disappointing that it is inferior to the description and pictures. The rod is one piece and seems pretty tough except for the single-seat guides. The reel is plastic junk with parts that will rust the first time they get wet, but it'll probably catch fish if you treat it like a 2500 size.

Great deal. Reel is vey cheap tho

Kevin November 15, 2025

Nice rod for the budget. Be careful. Don't drop the rod or squish the reel. Rod came with broken reel handle. Broke during shipping. I used one of my own handles from another rod and fished. The reel is really cheap and not smooth. The bail bent after transporting. Rod has no issues but only used once
