I didn't actually get this product until after my pony was done with stall rest post colic surgery. Wish I got it sooner. He's remained on a restricted hay diet and it is the dead of winter so helps to keep him occupied. Initially hung near wall then when it seemed he had the hang of it, moved towards middle of stall but too hard so moved back near wall and it lasted a couple weeks. Will definitely get another!
Positive peer pressure pushed me into purchasing this product for my pony (how's that for alliteration?). Many owners in my barn had either purchased or received these sweet-feed packed horse treats as holiday gifts and extolled their virtues and their caveats; I'll do the same, as being forewarned is forearmed! As far as taste, my TB seemed to have quite an appetite for the treat, but not distractingly so. He would leave it to eat his meals, nap, etc., so I would not be the reviewer to say he “was obsessed” with the product, but he did undoubtedly enjoy it! It took him just over a fortnight to consume the entire product BUT I did hang it in his stall AS INSTRUCTED by the manufacturer. I not only followed Uncle Jimmy's directions but learned from my barn mates the pitfalls of allowing your horse to pin the product against a wall or other surface which allows the horses' teeth to find steady purchase, thus allowing him/her to consume the entire product in one standing. As other reviewers have stated, I did find bits of grain stuck in odd places on my horses' face (and ears and throatlatch and crest and poll- you get the idea), but nothing a damp, hot towel couldn't remove. I would purchase this product again, and recommend you give it a try. Buy a screw-eye with it (https://www.smartpakequine.com/screw-eye-2041p), find some baling twine and hang it from the ceiling but at your horses' eye-height, keep it away from the stall walls and let your horse give it a go. And try not to get it stuck to your own head when you're mucking out!
I bought this about 2 weeks ago because I have a paint colt who gets very bored. I opened the container and HE LOVES IT! His poor little mouth is trying to grab the whole thing ahaha. It smells very sweet. Be careful in hot weather, though. It gets sticky!
My horses just love their Uncle Jimmy's Hangin' Balls. It helps to relieve boredom from the stall when kept in during bad weather.
My horse can't get enough of these. She prefers the peppermint one but will take any she can get! If I had to pick a con I would say that she finishes them too fast so it'd be nice if they were cheaper!
My girl LOVES these, but I spent about a half hour every morning with a rag and warm water trying to clean molasses off her entire face =P Glad she had so much fun, but it's a bit of a hassle. Switched over to the "Big Licky" and that solved the problem though! So A+ for the recipe, but the ball shape just isn't quite right for us.
So Uncle Jimmy's Hangin Ball comes in a nice tub so you don't get sticky fingers pulling it out. The side of the container says it lasts one week to one month. My horse must be an over achiever.....ate it in one day. And no...he's not underfed. I like the ball, clearly Mo did (my horse). Just wished for the money it would last a little longer.
My horse loves to play with and bite the ball, but I had it hanging in the middle of his stall and he completely covered himself in sticky, hard to get off molasses. It took me an hour to get it off and he still has stains, but its winter so I can't wash him. Another horse at my barn has one and the same thing happened. I moved it to the side and it still gets all over his face
My mare has zero interest in it. I even put it against the wall to make it easier for her, and she still finds it boring. It gets 2 stars however because the birds love the ball and pick on it frequently, and my mare seems to enjoy watching them doing this (bird TV?)
I've been buying these while my horse is on long term stall rest. The first couple worked okay once I figured out how to properly hang them, away from any walls that my horse could hold the treat ball against to devour it. The latest one fell off the rope within 2 days. I don't know if it's the heat (mid to upper 80s) and humidity in Georgia, or the insufficient rope size, or a combination. This product could be made better by using a larger rope, with a significant size knot at the bottom. As it's currently designed, it just falls off the rope and onto the ground.
