I just picked this up for my 3 year old son who LOVES astrology. Everything from stars, clouds, planets, sun and Moon. The Moon itself runs on 4 AA batteries and the little control runs on 2 AAA batteries (not included) so there isn't any cord you have to plug in the wall to get a real effect of the moon literally in the room. I, as the mother was playing with this, amazed how you can control what moon phase you want. The light it projects it just enough for your sleepy child to gaze into and fall asleep. I may get one for myself and I'm pushing 30 years old.
My oldest daughter loves her moon so much, we bought a 2nd for her little sister! We use it as a night light and since it goes off by itself, we don't need to worry about wasting batteries. She always asks for it if we forget to turn it on! Later, when she is older, we will start setting it to the phase the moon really is in that night and use it for beginning astronomy education. Great price at Wal-Mart, too! Can't be beat anywhere -- I looked & looked and ordered it with free delivery to the store -- didn't take long.
My 3 year old son recently got interested in the Moon, so I bought him this Moon night light that we stuck on the wall. He Loves it. We don't put it on the lunar cycles too much, but it works great and he loves looking at it while he falls asleep.
This is the third Moon In My Room I have given as gifts to my grandchildren. Educational, fully operational by the child via remote control and adds a soft light to a sometimes dark scary room.
I am a grandmother and have a cabin. My bedroom is decorated in wolf designs. The moon fit in the decor perfectly! The children love to see it lit up at night, especially as it goes through the 12 phases. Enjoyment and educational too! Works great as a night light for thirty minutes as your child falls asleep, then shuts off automatically. I am going to purchase a second moon for a grandchild with special needs, as it seemed to calm her.
I am a 6th grade teacher and moon phases are in our cuuriculum. I originally bought this for my classroom to use as a great way to help students remember the moon phases for those TCAP tests. But when I got it I thought I'd try it out in my sons room (ages 4 & 8). They absolutely LOVE it. Now they are anxious to go to bed so they can see "the moon". The disc that comes with it is good too. At home we just use the automatic switch so it goes off without wasting the battery. I love that you can click it one phase at a time because I will use that option when TEACHING the names of the phases. Now I just need to buy another one for my class, and will purchase more for gifts.
Pros: ==== * Super easy to hang on the wall and light enough that you aren't limited to the studs. * Three-dimensional look and feel -- even looks cool when it's off. * The remote only has three buttons: on/off, manual cycle through the 12 phases, and auto-cycle (5 seconds between phases), so it's easy for a child to use. * Stays on for 30 minutes, then shuts off automatically. Cons: ==== * Eats batteries. (4 AAA in the moon, 2 in the remote) * The remote is small -- a little bigger than a contact lens case -- so it's easy to misplace.
I bought these for my grandchildren. They have so many toys already I decided to look for something that might be educational as well as entertaining. The moon in my room makes bedtime fun for my three year old. He now looks forward to bedtime and loves to make his moon the same as the one in the sky. It's easy to do, with the click of the remote control you can change from a quarter moon to a half moon or whatever. There is an auto shut-off in so your little one can fall asleep under the light of the moon. I may have to get one for myself!
Only stays on half an hour...my daughter wakes up in the middle of the night then cries because she can't see so we have to have a separate nightlight for her after the moon goes off. However, she does like having a moon in her room and it lights up the room well.
This is the second moon I have bought. It lasts 3-4 months and stops working!! My son LOVES the moon and uses the 30 min timer every night. I am so disappointed in this product! Its sad because it is such a cute idea, but it seems once you have to change the batteries, it stops working soon after!!!
