Brought back great memories, as I saw the original series when it was on the air.
Victory at Sea is a documentary series about WWII using mostly 16mm combat movie film. It is black and white photography. The music is excellent. If you expect color HD video, you will be disappointed because it does not exist.
If you are interested in the history of the Second World War I would highly recommend this documentary. It is the best documentary of its type that I have ever seen.
I remember this series when I was a little kid. The footage is outstanding. The picture isn't alway great, but this is footage from the 1940's so what do you expect. Definitely not digitally remastered. For the price, you can't beat it.
This is the best collection of WW II naval history that I have seen. Amazing collection of naval history for a price that is also amazing. If you are interested in WW II history, this is the dvd to get.
Consider this: at 13 hours, this documentary is the second longest piece of classical music in the world (Wagner's Ring Cycle is the longest at 16 hours). That being said, this musically passionate documentary has stood the test of time since it was first aired in the early 1950s. It tells the story of WWII through the use of actual film footage with the added advantage of Richard Rodgers superb score. Forty years ago, if you wanted to own this series, you would've had to buy it on film for about $1200. Now on DVD, you get the same series for less than $12.00. So, what are you waiting for?
A wonderful piece of history. Live footage of numerous battles in the South Pacific during WWII.
Excellent
I purchased after an unhappy experience with the History Channel version, which had a decent picture but poor volume (Leonard Graves' voice was hard to here; music was fine). This set has excellent voice/music volume although the film quality appears to be have dubbed to DVD from VHS. Still, for the price and extremely quick delivery by WalMart, it's a good value.
I was very dissapointed and had to return it to the store. the product was to be the complete 26 episodes, however when I opened the DVD case there were only two discs with 9 episodes each. Apparently a third disc containing the final 8 episodes was not included.
