My Gelding Loved This

SmartPaker Shaune November 12, 2025

I fed this product to my gelding for several years while we were in the midst of our fox hunting era. Lysine is the most limiting amino acid in horses, meaning it is the amino acid most likely to be deficient in their diet and the one that will first restrict protein synthesis. Therefore, it was very important to set my boy up for success while he was on a schedule of increased work. Protein synthesis effects how the body builds and maintains muscle, as well as aids in muscle recovery. Lysine also is a major component of collagen, which helps to support those connective tissues. As we were increasing our work and adding a lot of jumping, this was an added level of support I was looking to give. Even though this product is a powder, my gelding ate it all up, no problem! Highly recommend this product to those increasing their workloads and looking to build and maintain muscle (including those toplines).

Visual difference in weeks!

Darci August 30, 2017

My thoroughbred really needed the extra help that this supplement provided to build the muscle in her hind and topline. She hated the taste, but she is a very picky horse in general (hates apples and peppermints, etc.). All I had to do was add a little water into her grain and other smartpak supplements so that it stuck to her grain. The product itself made a huge difference within two weeks. Her hind end is rounder and her topline has filled out more. This, along with an appropriate amount of hay, grain, and consistent work has made her very muscly. Love it!

Steady muscle increase

Dressagequeen February 21, 2018

I bought this about a month ago. I have a young Friesian Cross who was really tight and had a problem with muscle development. Since starting this supplement he has been less sore and I've seen improvement in his top line development.

Pure Lysine is the most economical way

Izzey March 17, 2014

Pure Lysine is the most economical way to put some muscle weight on a horse. It works relatively fast and doesn't change their attitude (doesn't make them hot or distracted or anything).

Pure Lysine

Claudia and Poppy July 19, 2017

My horse has been on this product for the past 8 months because he had scratched his eye and also had a small eyelid bump or blemish of unknown origin. I chose not to do a biopsy so close to his eye, and have been trying this product to see if it made any difference. The blemish is reduced to half its size and the scratch has not scarred or left any residual damage to his eye. I am very pleased with this supplement for eye health and will continue using it. One small scoop on his grain daily and it is very affordable as well!

Can't beat this product!

Haley November 22, 2013

I have 2 hard working barrel horses that needed a supplement to help them rebuild the muscle after strenuous work outs. A friend suggested Lysine and after reading all the reviews I decided to give it a try. I couldn't believe the difference in just 3 weeks. I feed 2-3 scoops a day, although the smell isn't great they ate it no problem.  My leaner QH filled out more in his hip and doesn't look like a Thoroughbred any more. And my other horses bulk out tremendously.  I definitely stand behind this product. Mine will stay on Pure Lysine! And you really can't beat the price!

Seems to be working!

jsicard1992 August 3, 2014

We bought this for our 5 yr old aqha gelding because dispute being riden on a regular basis and being fed good quality feed wasn't muscling up like we wanted. So far he's been on this about a week and I see a little more definition in his muscle and his hind quarters look to be filling out! I also love that this product unlike most muscle supplements doesn't make your horse hot. Baised on the good results we are aeeing with our gelding I think we are going to be putting our two mares on it too! Also from reading pervious comments it sounds like it's safe for our hypp mare too which is a huge plus because she is a hard keeper. Love this product so far an would recommend!

Helps build more muscle mass

Breana March 26, 2011

My horses chiropractor was the one who recommended lysine for my horse. Before I started using lysine for my horse. He didn't have a lot of muscle mass and he need to gain some more weight. Now after being on lysine for 2 years. He looks great. He has nice topline and it helped him maintain his weight. It also help make his hooves much stronger.

Lysine great supplement for aging muscles

Cindi51 November 9, 2012

I have a 30 year old Pinto gelding. When I bought him a couple of years ago, he had no muscle behind his shoulders and a pointed butt, no muscles there either. I read that the coastal bermuda in our area is very low in lysine which is needed to help maintain muscle mass in horses. So I started him on the lysine and a smartpak joint supplement. He is a beautiful 30 years young. I still ride him, and he loves to be first when going on trail rides. He still has the spunk of a 3 year old. Sometimes when I let him out to run in the arena on his own, he will actually buck and run! I love to see him this heathy and happy. We also had a Strangles breakout at the place were I board. Lysine helps with viruses, I think. Rio did not get the Strangles. He stayed perfectly healthy through the whole process. Thank you so much!

Improves Hoof Health

Karen February 20, 2012

My Appy/Draft cross (@13 yrs.) has been barefoot w/ a natural trim since I've owned him (2 yrs.+) and has done well. We participate in a variety of activities. However, he suffers a laminitic type reaction to vaccinations w/ accompanying tenderness and loss of concavity. The 2nd time this happened, my trimmer suggested supplementing with l-lysine (along w/ milk thistle for detox) and he recovered much faster. His overall hoof (incl. frog) quality is better also. I check his feet daily & rasp him weekly between trims, so I am very aware of any changes to his feet. He also seems to be feeling and moving better in general. I have also seen similar improvement in 2 other horses on the farm who were much worse off. All 3 are easy keepers and so far this has proved to be a simple and economical way to supply them with a vital nutrient w/o compromising their health in other ways.
