In general, I prefer WD products. This 1TB SSD is an amazing technological achievement. Several years ago I couldn't imagine that I will live up to the time when I can buy and use this disk drive. I'm quite lucky.
I just got this, and it's my third SSD from Western Digital. I fill up my previous drives and I buy another one. Always dependable and simply work. They are fantastic. I will buy another one when I fill this one up too!
Great product, overall. Fast and good looking; compact design!
Over the past several years I have purchased more than several solid state drives (SSD). Over that same time I have noticed that the prices of SSDs have come down, and the reliability has improved. (I had some issues with some of the first drives I bought, but I am not certain what the causes were.) The 2 TB Western Digital SSD I most recently purchased works as expected, is stylish (for an SSD), and is a great media for backing up your files. I work off of a 1 TB SSD thumb drive on multiple my workstations, and back up my files at least once a week to another portable device. While this way of working is more flexible, and saves me from stressing over a hard drive crash, there is always the possibility that the portable media you are using could fail. Its nice to have the nearly 1 TB of files I have created over the years backed up on another device like my WD 2 TB SSD. My back up ritual is simple (copy and paste), and is relatively quick given the number and size of files that I back up. As the price of SSDs comes down, and the technology improves having an SSD as part of you tech equipment will become an even bigger value.
i have a 1tb drive and a 512gb drive and they both work great, no complaints!
It's tiny, it's quiet, and it works flawlessly.
I was very happy to see that Western Digital was playing in the external SSD Space. Having a 2TB Samsung T7 in the fleet currently as well as a 1TB SanDisk dual thumb drive, among a plethora of external 2.5" drives of varying sizes and models, I thought that I really ought to check this one out. I sized up to the 4TB as my MacBook Pro has only 256 onboard, and I wanted the ability to dump GoPro Max and Hero 10 Videos as well as DSLR Photos and more onto a device and edit straight from there...It took me a bit to get my workflow right, but it has turned out well. This goes with me basically everywhere...may need to velcro it onto my laptop :-) This is price competitive for the size and speeds. It is not especially hardened or durable, but external suds are better than spinning rust. this has withstood a couple air and car trips effortlessly.
The WD software did not install. I went to the WD website and downloaded the software, but it still did not install, so I am not able to use any of the utilities (scheduled backup, etc). I was able to copy paste the files from my other device to the WD Passport device. The WD passport looks nice.
I have been using numerous WD external hard drives for years and the My Passport portable SSD drive is the worst. The backup speed is average for the SSD but viewing the backup folders and files is excruciatingly slow. It takes about a minute to open a small file and it will freeze Windows Explorer after opening a few small files. Unlike the earlier MyPassport, Ultra Passport, Essential, WDMyCloud, etc., that were quick to install, the Passport SSD also has poor user manual (non-existent) that lacks clear and adequate set up instructions and was agonizing to install. I had to scour the internet for information to download additional software. I am not sure if the new unit is defective and if not, I will return it to avoid further problems with a product that I have no confidence in.
Extremely hard to set up and use. Slowest backup ever experienced. Bought this to replace an old WD passport with a standard hard drive. This unit is slower!
