Me being totally blind from birth I especially like that when this drive spins up it sounds like a nearly silent jet plane taking off. Without sight, screen contentprintedmaterial colors and lights are useless but subtle sound cues are priceless when installing linux on a harddrive.very useful drive

Quality tends to cost more

dante116 August 5, 2015

It's worth it. I've had WD Blue, Red, Green and Black drives, and the Black drives always outlast the others. Better durability, better cooling, much faster, more dependable. The difference in price between the low end Blue and the high end Black is about $20. For the extra $20 you get between two and five years more life than the average consumer level Blue drive. Granted, I tend to move anything I really want to keep onto other drives at about three years because drive failure is typically imminent at three years, but with the black drives I can still get a lot of high speed life out of them.

Superior product

Freddiefreeloader July 15, 2016

Solved all our problems with our computer. It is now restored to factory condition and we love it once more. This hard drive is simple to install and really easy to get back up and running. Also, this HD drive increases our capacity to almost double what we had. Luckily, when we bought the computer we did make the factory image discs as advised.

Great Hard Drive

shopsmarttx February 6, 2016

This was an easy install, and is a super quiet hard drive. The cloning software made it easy to clone my smaller drive, and saved a lot of time without the need to reinstall windows. I'm super pleased with this purchase, and would highly recommend WD drives as they are all I will buy from this point forward.

2015 black VS 2009 blue

VJJohn February 4, 2016

I have 2 identical computers. Both the same model, made the same year, have the same RAM, & power supply in them. They are totally exact copies of each other. In one, I put in this drive, reformatted clean to NTFS. In the other I put in a 7200 rpm 1TB WD blue drive from 2009 with over 18,000 hours on it & reformatted it clean too. I first installed identical W7 OS's on both. Installation was almost 8 minutes faster on the 2009 blue drive than on the 2015 black drive. I continued to install all my preferred software on both of them. Identical for both. Boot times & restart times after it was done & to this day is almost 20% faster on the one with the old 2009 blue drive, than it is with the one with this band new black drive. I bought this for performance & longevity, but the performance on my very old well used blue drive is unquestionably better. Side by side both drives look identical except for the label on it. They even weigh the same. I suspect they're selling blue drives for more money with an extended warranty & then just labeling them as black. They both are very quiet & sound identical.

Slow. Failed. Returned.

Anonymous January 20, 2026

I have always used Western Digital drives in my builds and replacements. Up until now, a very satisfied cutstomer. For a 7200 rpm drive - slow. Failed after one week.

WD black hard drive

joebiddy June 27, 2021

This is the second hard drive I have purchased. The first one completely shut down two of my computers and they had to be re-configured to work again. I got a refund on that one. The second hard drive came to me from the Return Center in a cardboard box, not the original box, with no instructions, warranty or screws. I immediately took that back for a refund as I did not pay good money for a returned item.
