Likes small footprint low height laser cross-hairs work lamp table height crank 5 speed 3.2 amp Dislikes keyless chuck Size is a very important consideration when choosing certain power tools to fit in my tiny little shop. I also despise underpowered tools that cannot accomplish their primary function. Keep in mind this is not made for a commercial metalworking shop, but for us weekend DIYers and hobbyists this model provides plenty of power with an abundance of cool features and doesn't break the bank. I believe this newer model is just a smidge taller than its predecessor, with a table height crank, and keyless chuck (bleh) . I use mine mostly on wood, but it made quick work of a 1/2" hole in 1/4" cold rollled steel when I needed it to. Press is adequately heavy to stay in place, but not so heavy I can't pick it up and slide it under my workbench when I need more bench space. There is minimal setup required and mine was straight and true without any adjustments from the get-go. Crosshairs were dead on as well. Before buying this I watched a lot of YouTube comparisons and this model was well liked so I grabbed one (great price here). My experiences have not disappointed and I hereby add my personal seal of approval. Try it, you'll like it!
I haven't had much of a chance to use it yet, but I do have a few issues with it. The runout is good, I like the keyless chuck, and the laser and work light is nice. I selected this one as it's one of the few bench top drill presses in this price range with a geared table height adjustment. However, the crank gears are poorly cut and designed so it binds up when lowered. I thought about returning it but I think I can smooth and shim the gears to make it work. Another issue was with the packing. The thin metal drive pully cover was bent from moving in the box. Not a big deal as I was able to straighten it out. Finally, the belt tension adjustment is poorly designed and difficult to slide the motor to get proper tension.
The metal piece on top guarding the belt was bend and the screw to hold it together was broke on arrival. I used it for a single project, and the motor died. It just kind of hums when you turn it on now, giving it a bit of assistance it will spin for a bit but without enough power to actually drill. Having to pack/mail back is a complete hassle, and walmart doesn't cross ship replacements so i've got no drill press for a week or two while all that is worked out.
