A pleasant experience this upright freezer has been; however, it did not start that way. First, the freezer arrived one day late and I had to adjust my schedule accordingly. Yes, it had nothing to do with the operation of the freezer itself, but I am including it in the experience nonetheless. Second, when I unboxed the freezer there was a lone nut lying in the packing material. After following all the preparation procedures prior to plugging the unit into power, I had noticed the temperature control knob had separated from the temperature control stub and the temperature control stub was loose and recessed into the its housing. It was this point I realized the nut I had found in the packing material was actually for attaching the temperature control unit to the housing. After reattaching the nut and the knob, setting the temperature control knob to number 5 setting, I plugged the freezer into power. I need to mention, I did use one of those energy monitoring devices to see the power usage of the freezer. From ambient room temperature, the freezer drew 55 watts or 0.46 amps at 120 volts. Over the course of several hours, I finally saw the wattage bottom-out at 45 watts. I was very pleased with the power usage. And after several hours of letting the freezer cool down, I began adding already frozen food to the freezer. I have a 25-liter portable freezer and I was able to fit all the food from it into the freezer and still had at least 55-65% space available in the freezer. I filled two ice trays, stacked them, and placed them in the freezer. In approximately three hours I had rock-hard ice cube ready to use. The next day I went and bought a freezer thermometer to help dial-in a zero temperature for the freezer. With the temperature control set at 5, the thermometer was reading -10 F. From my research, frozen food is safe at 0 F. So, each day I am tweaking the temperature control knob until I have an internal freezer temperature of 0 F. Not only will my food be safe, I will, hopefully, be using the minimum amount of energy to keep it safe. I keep the freezer near the kitchen, for easy access. I know its not the best location due to the lights and human traffic making the area warm, but keeping it nearby makes things much more convenient. I can say it is quiet. I do not hear any noise over ambient sounds, but I can notice the vibration of the compressor running if the area is dead silent. Again, I am very pleased with the noise level of the freezer. I think I received a good deal when I purchased this freezer. I price compared and it was the lowest around, even lower than some of those obscure retail websites on the internet. I have not had it long and I hope I will receive years of good use from it. This is my first Whynter purchase. The experience did not start of great, but has been going great thus far.
