It was easy to put together and took around 20 minutes by myself. It's lightweight and easy to move around but sturdy enough to hold books and baskets. The color is a nice warm walnut. The finish was slightly uneven in a few places but not terribly noticeable. Easy enough to fix with furniture polish.
These are beautiful and I actually put them together myself, which is saying something.
I have purchased bookshelves of this type three times now and this is the best yet. Some assembly is required this time, but that makes for better shipping. The marks for the tabs that the shelves fold down on are a little off, but that does not make a difference once it is set up. You would think the shelves would be top heavy, but even a shift side to side is made less so by the small bars that are screwed into the top of the bottom and the bottom of the top shelves. Four screws keep it stable and the curve that is on the shelves also helps. These are not only made for those who plan to move the shelves once again. Anyone who has put together six foot high inexpensive shelves knows how difficult it can be to keep it in place while assembling. Four Stars and Kudos!!!
Basically a good product; however, I am pretty good at putting things together but this bookcase would probably make a less stubborn person put it away until they had a second pair of hands to hold it together during assembly. There are a couple of stages, unless you think outside of the box, that are just impossible by yourself. Finally, leave the screws loose because it is very difficult to put the shelves in place without a lot of play in the frame. My frame was loose but the three shelves were nearly impossible to slide in without the whole thing falling apart. I put some pretty good gouges in the wood getting the first shelf to stay in while I got the other two in but I got it all together by myself. The shelves are not adjustible (the description does not say) but the bottom and middle shelves are 12" tall. A regular size 3-ring binder will fit but will stick out about 1" because the dept of the shelves are "10 deep. Looks pretty good.
I like the style of the bookcase, which is why I chose it, but it was very difficult to assemble. I have assembled a similar bookcase by my self in the past, but with this one I needed help. It was easy starting out, but actually getting the shelves into the frame posed problems. Maybe it would be easier for a handier person. The directions should have been more explicit. It looks great now.
Well, somehow I thought it was preassembled. I've assembled lots of furniture over the years but really wasn't in the mood to do so this time. However, I began to take the pieces out of the box & the shelves had these yucky yellow mustard stained patches in several locations per shelf. I had ordered the natural & am very familiar with the color variations inherent in natural. These stains weren't within my expertise to remove. Returned the item. Did not reorder; not in the mood to wrangle with it this time. Normally Walmart is aces with online orders.
Imagine my surprise when I opened the boxes and found that these weren't already assembled folding bookcases! World Market used to carry the same bookcase cheaper that was already assembled and came out of the box, shelves folded down, and voila! it was ready. Today I have to find a Phillips head screwdriver and another person to help me hold the sides and back stretchers while I screw them together. I'm very surprised that you don't have the items assembled. The boxes would be close to the same size, weight for shipping would be the same. I'm thinking that it's going to be hard for some other senior citizens to kneel or crouch to assemble. Can you rethink this? The product is nice -- all the pieces are smooth and strong -- but it's going to take me hours and discomfort today to make them ready for books.
I put this item together as tightly as I could and was unable to get the shelves to lie flat or keep the outer screws tight.
I really like the bookcase i ordered it to replace one i recently threw out but it came with two big obvious chips in the wood on one side. 2 reasons i didnt send it back 1- i have paint the same color can cover it. Its in my bedroom. And 2. I already threw the other bookcase out. - but it has really has caused me to be hesitant of ordering from walmart in the future. I was looking at a desk for grandtr but now i dont know if i will be placing the order. Fyi there were no loose pieces of wood in the box so this was probably defective from the warehouse.
I had been looking for a light colored bookshelf for a while to add to a set of 3 I already had. The item listed was, it seemed, a perfect match at a great price. However, when I went to assemble the item, I found that is was poorly manufactured and a pain to install. The first problem encountered was that holes needed to install the shelf clips were missing on one of the sides. I had to drill these myself using positions based on the holes on the 'correctly' drilled side. However, when assembled, one of the shelves sloped because the side holes were not aligned with the back. I finally gave up and simply screwed the shelf to the sides since I never plan on moving this and the ability to fold the case isn't that important. (Also, one of the metal support clips was broken and basically useless.) When I went to stack this on top of another bookcase I found that the front left leg of the bookcase was 1/4 inch shorter than the right. So now, I have folded cardboard wedged in to keep the top case from pitching forward. I supposed I could have returned this, but after months of waiting to find the 'right' item, I decided to live with the flaws. It's in a basement office, so not seen by anyone but me. It's secured to the wall so unlikely to tip over because of the short front leg. This would be a great purchase if the manufacturer would institute some quality control.
