A Fun N64-inspired 3D Platformer
Yooka-Replaylee is a remake of the 2017 game Yooka-Laylee. The original Yooka-Laylee was considered a disappointment. It was developed by the indie studio Playtonic, which is comprised of some ex-Rareware people. Rareware is the studio behind the classic Nintendo 64 Banjo-Kazooie games. They promised a spiritual successor to those games, but it didn't live up to fans' expectations. What we have here is a 2nd attempt at this game. Many issues people had with the original game have been fixed. I never played the original, so I can really only speak on the remake. There's unfortunately only 5 worlds, but they're really big and packed with things to see and do. Platforming and collecting is the bulk of the game, both of which are executed well. The controls are smooth and traversing these massive maps is a lot of fun. The game has a decent amount of mechanical variety, which keeps things fresh. Vibrant visuals and a solid framerate (PS5). Great music by Grant Kirkhope. Overall, it's a pretty worthy spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie and one of the best collectathons of recent times. I commend Playtonic for not giving up on this franchise and for trying to make things right. I highly recommend it to fans of late '90s/early 2000s 3D platformers.
