Review Title: Perfect for seed stratification! " I actually bought this pack for cold-stratifying native seeds (Black-eyed Susans) in the fridge for 30 days. It stays perfectly damp without molding and makes it very easy to see the seeds when it's time to plant. It's a great 'life hack' for gardeners ooking to jump-start their spring planting!"
recommend for my 20 gallon fish tank I ordered the 5 pound bags. I dumped the sand into a large Menards bucket and poured room temperature bath water into it in the bath tub, swirled it around with my arm and dumped out the water and repeated this process until the water ran clear before placing it in my fish tank, pouring a cup of the rinsed out sand one cup at a time. the first is still alive. the sand looks good and the plants are still alive. I recommend this item
I love the color and the grain texture, but if you intend to use this, be sure to rinse it very, very thoroughly first. It made the water in the bucket I put it in extremely cloudy! I was unable to see my fingers just 1 inch under the surface, it was that cloudy. I rinsed water through it for quite some time until the water ran crystal clear when running my fingers through it. It appears this is "manufactured sand," essentially made by crushing and grinding down rock. Once cleaned though, in my aquarium it is gorgeous! Just rinse, rinse, rinse first!
I usually purchase STONEY RIVER aquarium supplies for my start up fish tanks. The amount was perfect for my 5 gallon tank. The sand is a great substrate with minimal particles getting into your filter after the first rinse.
When I recently purchased this bag of sand for my 20 gallon fish tank, I was a bit nervous of how it was going to look with the small tan rock gravel I already had for it. After the setup, I liked it just fine. When the light in the aquarium is dimmed, you barely notice the sand. I purchased 4 of the 5 pound bags to measure at least 2in in the tank. I first layered regular garden soil mixed with water to get it "muddy" then applied the sand to sit right on top of the soil. I then added the gravel to hold and support my aquatic plants and filled the tank with water. I must say the look and function of my fish tank turned out great!
The price and quality were good. I ordered it for pick up and waited 45 minutes foe service. Not at all worth it. I'll go else ware in the future,
The sand is pretty and takes a while to clear after rinceing. The biggest drawback that I have found is the smell . When you open the package it's shipped in you immediately smell acitone. And when you open the bag the smell is stronger. I put mine in a bucket and washed it with clean water before useing it.
I was disappointed with the Stoney River White Aquatic Sand. Despite multiple rinses, it created a lot of dust and clouded my aquarium water for days. Some of the grains were uneven and sharp, which could be harmful to delicate fish or plants. For the price, I expected a cleaner, more consistent product. Unfortunately, this sand was more trouble than it was worth, and I wouldn't purchase it again.
Whatever you do -DO NOT PUT WHATEVER THIS STUFF IS in your fish tank!!!!! Water like milk and dead fish. IT'S JUST SOME KIND OF WASTE THAT THEY NEEDED TO MAKE MONEY ON INSTEAD OF PAYING TO GET RID OF IT, AND IT IS NOT CONDUCIVE TO LIFE. MIGHT AS WELL BE, OR MIGHT BE LEAD PAINT CHIPS.
To put on top of my plants, i wanted a finer sand. This is very coarse and was messier than whatni purchased through amazon.
