Brother HL-L2420DW Wireless Compact Monochrome Laser Printer with Duplex, Mobile Printing

So far, Brother hasn’t let me down. I had a Brother word processor my mom bought me in 1991 that last all the way through from high school to finishing my PhD. I have a trusty, reliable Brother sewing machine machine and so far the printer is so much better than any overpriced pos HP printer.

I love this printer. I have been buying brother printers that used cartridges, but I definitely prefer this laser printer. It’s a lot faster and a less work. I needed a printer that was capable of Double-Sided Printing, with good printing speed. The print quality is good. I did not need a lot of bells and whistles. If you’re looking for these qualities, this is the printer for you.

The overall quality of this device seems to be quite high and the print quality is good, but it has been difficult to get set up properly. The single-line LCD display, requiring multiple button pushes to find a desired setting, is both confusing and time-wasting. After several attempts to change settings and finally getting most of what I wanted, I vowed not to try changing anything again! The online instructions are confusing and not very helpful, and the recommended software and firmware updates don't seem to happen without difficulties.

Look at the smallest display of any device I’ve ever seen. I’m snapping photos trying to follow the YouTube Video. Next look at the pages of information that get spit out on the initial setup. This was by far the hardest computer to set-up. It’s a brother product and that surprises me. The printer comes already programmed with its own metrics. It has a password on the printer and on the printout page. The screen to program the printer is useless. It has buttons for ok back up or down. There is no menu or home. A lot of wasted time and energy. It doesn’t connect to AirPrint. The QRCode is outdated. The drivers don’t download. I’m a sophisticated computer user. I’m not an IT. I will never understand why they made this compact printer so butchered. It also goes to sleep in 20 seconds. In the photos you will see the 10 pages of data about the machine. You have to keep holding down the buttons to find the printer’s pw. I found that out from YouTube. The pw on the printout is completely different. I wasted my entire weekend believing that it would connect. It’s not Brother quality. Don’t be like me and buy something with virtually no display. QR wrong and AirPrint doesn’t even recognize the machine.

If I could give this printer zero stars I would. I have always been a Brother girl. I love their products. I had a very fancy model that I use for years until it died on me. On a budget, I purchased this model, refusing to try another brand. This is by far the worst printer and the worst waste of money I've ever spent. It goes into a deep sleep within seconds of printing and there is no option to shut it off. Support tells you that all you have to do is try to print something and it wakes up. That is very wrong. You actually have to shut the printer off, turn it back on, and then print within seconds, to get it to actually work. I have never gotten it to connect to my Wi-Fi because the set up screen is so small, only a couple words fit on it at a time. I have a home office and use my printer frequently. I waste so much time every day trying to get this to print. Sometimes I even have to restart my computer to get the computer to even recognize the printers there. I get printer errors more with this machine than I ever got with my $29 HP printer. I recommend if you're looking for efficiency, do not waste your money on this. You will be very disappointed. It's really a shame because brother products are normally very well built. I have a portable scanner from them, that I use every day and love. You really do get what you pay for. If you're loyal to brother products I recommend spending the extra money to get the DCP-L2640DW. Otherwise bypass this one and go with a different name brand.

I’m sure it’s a decent product when it comes with all the parts. I got a $10 discount for a refurbished model. I went to assemble it and guess what? The drum unit assembly is missing. And I can’t return it bc it’s refurbished. So I’m left to either contact the manufacturer or buy a drum unit. I looked up drum units and they are MORE than the $10 discount price, ranging anywhere from $20 to $167 (more than the printer itself!). Cool. I bought it bc I needed it for immediate use and now I have to wait for a part to be shipped to me. Might as well have bought a brand new one.

This was the largest stress I had in sometime. The set up was terrible then it ran out of toner. I spent 3 hours trying to reset the printer after replacing the toner to new. I threw it away. It never did reset. Won’t buy another brother product again.

I try to always find something positive to say about everything, but unfortunately, it's impossible for this printer. No matter what I tried, it would not connect to my printer wirelessly. Unless your printer is right next to your work area close enough to connect with a cord, this one is not for you.

I have a computer tech who has installed many printers and after many hours and the second day was not able to get to work.I still had to pay him for his work.. He said it was defective. Is there any compensation for having to pay for the tech?
