Here is my story....I have 4 elderly cats (my former fosters) who were not adaptable because there are several health problems. They are ours now :) I also have sensitivity to some chemical elements myself, so a natural cat litter must be. For years I used another brand "Cedarific" and was happy with it. Then there was a serious shortage in supplies and I began to look for an alternative brand of natural cat litter. Cats are naturally suspicious creatures (some more, some less) and it is not recommended to jump completely from one brand to another. They may not accept the new one. You need to slowly introduce this to the cats by adding a small amount of new to the old one. Before I got to the "Catspot" brand, I tried 6 other brands. It was a big hassle with a big mess... By this point I was already in desperation, completely out of my old brand and our basement began to smell, which was NEVER the case. I mixed a hand full coconut cat litter into each litter box and when 15 minutes later I entered the basement any smell identified with the presence of cats completely disappeared. Here is my list of pros and cons of Catspot coconut cat litter. PROS: this litter absorbs the smell very well and I mean REALLY well. This is a soft, lightweight litter that is ideal for elderly cats, cats with arthritis, tripod, declawed cats or just sensitive and picky cats. It is biodegradable and I put the used litter under evergreen trees and bushes in my backyard saving money for mulch and fertilizers (I remove the "brownies" before that).... CONS: the biggest minus of this litter is dust. I have 4 litter boxes in a basement with a cement floor and walls and it doesn't really matter to me here. But I also have 2 litter boxes on each floor and here the dust is a problem. For the record, I vacuum the floor every 3-5 days, but cleaning every thing in the room from brown dust is another level of involvement... Also because of the lightness of this litterer it is tracking easy. However, I solved this problem by buying good litter box mats and carpets with a pattern that camouflage a bit. My old brand of litter has finally returned to the market, so I'm back to the usual routine, but I still use "Catspot" as a litter deodorizer by adding a small amount to each litter box and this combination works perfectly for me. Bottom line. Over the years of fostering and owning my own cats, I have learned one thing: the perfect cat litter does not exist!!!! They all have some pros and cons. If you are in the market for a new litter, I advise you to look at pros that are most suitable for your personal situation and cons with which you can live or adjust. First off my cats didn't like it! Second there was a fine brown dust allover the bathroom where the boxes are kept. And NO odor control which was our error.
