I have a pretty long run for my dryer vent that has a 90d elbow in it. I have been using some home depot brushes for years that are about 2-3 feet long. I have been using these short brushes along with my vacuum cleaner with hoses and my shop-vac to push and pull as much stuff out as possible. I thought I had the line pretty clear because with the shop-vac inside pushing air outwards, I felt the air flow was pretty good. But I got a new dryer recently and the check vent light kept coming on. That's when I went looking for something better to clean the line. As you might expect, my first thought is will this device clear the elbow. The answer is yes. The six rods are very flexible like the poles from a tent, but not nearly as stiff. Keep in mind that the vents are 4in wide, so the rods don't need to bend a full 90d. I discovered using this tool that I had a bunch of lint wedged up in the middle of the run. The wedge was to hard to push from the inside, so I attacked from the outside. I used a combination of the shop-vac pushing air out while I worked the cleaning brush from the outside. At some points, the brush wouldn't go any further, so I simply unscrewed the brush and used the long rod to attack the lint mass. The air pushing out helps to blow the loosened material out. After about an hour of working on the vent, I can say I have the whole run lint free. I am now able to use the tool from both inside and outside. As the directions state, only turn in a clockwise direction to keep the rods screwed together. Counter-clockwise turning may result in the rods coming apart. The picture shows all the rust covered lint that was stuck inside the dryer run. This tool was certainly worth the $18.
Does a GREAT job removing lint from dryer vent exhaust line! Wish I had purchased it years ago.
Great gadget for cleaning dryer vents!
It works, I used it with a drill machine. The process I followed was to attach one piece (Cable) at a time. Attach drill. Push it in. Unscrew cable from drill. Add another piece to start the process again. I had to go 30 ft so I needed to buy 3 of these. I started inside from the dryer side and Once the brush was out of the duct outside in my yard, I unscrewed the brush to pull the cable back. I was afraid of getting the brush stuck inside the duct.
This is a simple but fantastic tool. It was easy to assemble and use with a variable speed drill motor. Follow the directions. There are helpful videos on YouTube, too. Our dryer was becoming very inefficient -- taking 2+ hours to dry a load. Turns out that the dryer vent pipe from the laundry room to outside vent was clogged with lint. The whole project took about 90 minutes. after running the brush through several times, I filled the shop vac 4 times with lint.
Did an amazing job cleaning out my dryer vent. Went through a 90* elbow easily. Couldnt believe how much lint was in my vent.
Make sure you check the brush is secured every time you take it out. I did notice a possitive difference in drying time.
I think this would have worked well if my dryer vent had been installed well, but the aluminum piece on the dryer end had been squashed for some reason, and the aluminum piece on the outside end was not round. But what did work well is just disconnecting the duct from one end and reaching in to clean out all the lint in the first 9 feet of the slinky type duct, then disconnecting the other end and reaching in to clean out the last 9 feet, then reconnecting.
Lines bend and get twisted if stuck, then remain twisted after. Head should spiral not be round and force debris back up.
Two rods broke inside of dryer duct on first use. Fortunately, I was able to get my arm in far enough to remove them. So far 4 out of 6 rods have snapped, leaving me with only 4 feet usable now. I used a battery-operated drill to spin them in the duct. They don't work well on a 90 degree angle either. You can't even feel when the rod snaps because they are so light weight.
