Good value

Francisco January 31, 2026

It's good soil for the price. Miracle Grow has more fertilizer in it and perlite, but this is a few dollars cheaper. I use this and mix it with Miracle Grow potting mix and it works great with my plants. I use it in my fabric pots. I would recommend it.

Big Bag Half The Price

DevinG March 7, 2026

I store my soil in a big plastic sealing container, like the plastic bins, but with a latchable top. This soil is equiped with perlite mixed in with natural fertilizers. I prefer to use this soil because I don't have to add my valuable nutrients right off the bat, because this soil comes fertilized, enough to hold over a freshly planted plant, indoors or outdoors, for a few weeks, and that's good for a young plant that can't consume the real big nutrients I buy on the side.

Fungus Gnats in Soil!! Gnat infestation from soil

NaturalHairGirlie January 18, 2026

This soil gave me fungus gnats. I’m so upset because I’m dealing with a gnat issue. Couldn’t figure out where the issue was coming from but realized that every new potted plant where I used that specific soil had thee most gnats on the sticky traps I put in the soil. I wondered why my hallway light-bug catcher had so many gnats when there are No plants in my hallway. I finally open my closet door, where I had been storing the bag and see gnats on the bag! Immediately went into the incinerator room but now I have a fungus gnat issue to resolve. I’ve already purchase a set of bug catching plug-in draining my electricity 24/7 in 3 outlets! I had to use neem oil sprays and may have to repot all of those plants to get rid of the issue in the soil! A complete headache. And I’ve never had a pest issue in any of my plants. I’m so annoyed!

More like wood chips with little to no soil

Sue January 26, 2026

This potting mix is mostly made up of large, undecomposed wood chips, which is very concerning for container plants. The wood is not broken down at all and looks more like mulch than potting soil. I used it in a self-watering pot, and something has already started growing on the surface—likely fungus or mold due to the excess raw wood material retaining uneven moisture. I have used other brands, including Miracle-Gro, and have never encountered this level of wood content in a potting mix. Proper potting soil should be well blended, fine-textured, and able to support root development—not compete with plants for nitrogen while decomposing. Overall, this mix is poor quality and unsuitable for potted plants unless heavily amended. I would not repurchase or recommend it for container gardening.

Bri March 26, 2026

I used this soil to start about 150 plants inside and transplant a few to bigger pots. Within 1 week the dirt is molding on the top and my transplanted plants are dying because of it. Also there was plastic and metal in the dirt

Trash!! My Nightmare w/Expert Gardener Potting Mix

Katrina September 24, 2025

Run, don't walk, away from this product. I am an avid gardener and decided to transplant some of my beautiful indoor plants into new containers using Expert Gardener Potting Mix for Potted Plants. What a disaster it has been. Shortly after re-potting, my home became completely infested with fungus gnats. I spent so much money on sticky traps, sprays, and natural remedies, desperately trying to get rid of the pests, never realizing the source of the problem was the very soil I had just bought. It turns out this potting mix was already infested with gnats and their eggs. The experience has been nothing short of a nightmare. I had to throw out three of my beautiful ivy plants and am now fighting to save my elephant ear houseplant, which I've moved outside in the hope that the soil will dry out and choke out the remaining gnats. This has been the worst product I've ever bought, causing me nothing but stress, wasted money, and the loss of some of my favorite plants. I would return this mess to Walmart, but honestly, I don't even want this trash soil in my car. Do yourself a favor and choose a different brand.

More wood than soil

Scott March 25, 2026

If you like sticks, wood chips, lolly pop sticks, chopped up landscape lumber, then this is for you. If you want potting soil, buy something else. My guess is that one half of this "soil" was just some form of wood. And why was there a lolly pop stick in this? Don't do it!

This stuff pretending to be potting ( mix) soil is junk. It has more wood chips in it than anything and it was moldy right out of the package. I hate it. Will never buy it again

Worst potting mix I’ve ever bought

999mom April 5, 2026

Lots of oversized sticks. Found some small black plastic pieces. This might be good for a garden but not for potted plants.

Awful. Mostly sticks and crap in it. The smell was horrendous. Some combo of chemicals and dead animal. Used it anyway figuring it would fade. It has but now I have a horrendous fungus gnat infestation and it is all coming from the plants I used this soil with. And they keep growing mushrooms. I haven’t watered any of them in weeks and the gnats continue. Do not buy.
