Farberware Edgekeeper 5-inch Santoku with Self-Sharpening Sheath

The Farberware Edgekeeper 5" Santoku with Self-Sharpening Sheath is a great product. I chose to review this item because I was interested in changing out all of my knives. I figured if this was a good product, I would go and buy a set after I made my review. I was not disappointed. This knife comes with a self sharpening sheath, which of course, sharpens each time you slide it in and out of the cover. To me that is an added bonus. I like my knives to have covers so that while I reach into my knife drawer, I don't get cut or stabbed.The size of this knife is perfect for me to handle. Not too big and not too small. The design on the knife is made so that foods do not stick to your knife while slicing. I always hated that when slicing cheeses or potatoes and other vegetables. This design allows air to be between the food and knife which prevent the foods from sticking and in turn allows for easy and fast slicing and chopping. This knife also has a nice wide surface to allow you to scoop up chopped ingredients. I definitely recommend this knife and plan on purchasing some as gifts for friends and family.

I have never really found a knife that I liked or that I thought worked well until this baby came into my life. I can cut blocks of cheese with ease, I can cut tomatoes without squishing them and making a huge mess, this knife is absolutely amazing. It is very well made and I believe it will last for many years. The sharpening sheath is also very durable and it is genius as far as I am concerned. I will never have to worry about the knife getting dull because every time I take it out of the sheath or put it back in the sheath it is being sharpened. What more could I ask for!!!!

This is a Faberwear 5 inch Santoku Edgekeeper knife with a self sharpening sleeve. I love this knife. You can actually cut hard vegetables with it. I was just looking for a knife I could cut through cabbage with. I have bough several knives[cheap ones] that wouldn't cut through cabbage. This is my usual cutting test. Whether a knife will stand up to cutting cabbage. But I forgot to buy cabbage,so I will use another vegetable as hard to cut. Sweet potatoes. First I take it out of the package and slide the knife into the sleeve several times. I want to see if it hangs on the sleeve. It doesn't. I washed the knife and started on the sweet potatoes. The knife is sharp and easily cuts through the potatoes several times.I cut through using the middle of the blade. I didn't have to bread the skin with the tip to start cutting. The knife is perfect for my hand. It's not too heavy, or long, or too thick to cut through vegetables. I would recommend rinsing off the blade after pulling it out of the sleeve in case of slivers. I also tried it on an apple. It cut the apple in very thin slices. This will be my go to knife. I would recommend this knife to anyone like me that can't tell if the knives are sharp in the store. This one I know is sharp.

The "Farberware" "5-Inch Santoku Knife with Edgekeeper Sheath" is a knife that every kitchen should have on hand. The sheath that houses the knife, will not only protect the blade, but as each time you pull the knife out, the built-in knife sharpener will always keep a nice clean edge on the blade. Then when your done, you slide the knife back into the sheath, as it sharpen's the knife once again. This is an ideal way to have a sharp cutting tool at hand at all times. This knife measures 5 inches long with a 1 and 3/4 inch cutting edge, with indentations in the blade so that the item being cut will not stick to the blade. It is ideal for chopping vegetables with ease. It has a solid resin handle, comfortable to hold in your hand, while it cut's right through any, or for whatever is needed to chop or slice, this knife will certainly do the job....wash with dish detergent, dry, and when not in use, the "Edgekeeper Sheath" keeps the knife protected while in storage "Farberware" knives are built to last and I recommend this knife for everyone...

I was looking forward to receiving this Santoku Knife. It is made by Farberware, which is a well known company, that I trust. It is a sturdy high carbon, stainless steel blade and is very strong, not at all flimsy. I enjoy cooking and so I do a lot of prep work. Sometimes slicing and chopping is a bit difficult, for me, as I have small, arthritic hands. I often find the big, long chef knives too unwieldy and heavy, for me, to use. They never seem to fit my small hand, the length is too much, they get too heavy, for me, and ultimately tire my arm out. I was hoping this smaller 5 inch knife would be easier, for me, to use and it is much easier. It is ergonomically designed, so it fits well into my hand and is comfortable, to use. I am now able to chop vegetables or slice through meats, to do my prep work, much more easily, than with a longer, heavier chef's knife. It is small enough that I may keep it in my cutlery drawer, which is a bit handier, than having it in the block. It is safely contained in a heavy sharpening sleeve, which has a built-in sharpener. The sharpener sharpens the edge, as the knife is removed. (This is great, as a dull knife is a dangerous knife - they tend to slip off the mark.) I am finding it much easier to chop and do my prep work, now, and would recommend this knife to anyone who enjoys cooking, but finds the larger chef knives difficult to handle. Thumbs up!

This knife is extremely sharp. We have a set of knives that I always thought were as sharp as could be, but, after getting this one, there was no comparison. I was very impressed and feel the sharpener on the sheath was a very impressive plus with the knife. I would recommend this to all.

I have a higher end 7" santoku knife that is well balanced and is perfect for my cutting needs. However, I have arthritis and even though the knife is great, it is a little heavy and makes the cutting job somewhat laborious. I thought this 5" Farberware Edgekeeper would be better suited for me since it did not seem as heavy, I decided to use it to cut up some chicken for freezing. It did the job well. I was able to cut through the meat as well as cartilage and bone. The knife was plenty sharp and fit my hand well. It did not seem unbalanced or heavy. I later used it to lop off the ends of a pineapple and slice through it. I suppose this was not the right knife to use for that job. But it worked just fine. So after all is said and done. I was satisfied with this knife thus far and really like the sheath. I don't know about the built in sharpener. Only time will tell if it is really doing it's job. I do like that I can put this knife in a picnic basket or take it to a special event and not have to worry about the sharp knife causing any injuries or damage during transport. I have used other Farberware products and have never been dissatisfied with them.

This little knife can cut through almost anything. It is amazingly sharp, very easy to use and chops my veggies, onions, garlic, green peppers like nothing else. First slice and your done all they way through to the bottom of the cutting board. The way that this knife is set up it will be with you forever, it has a self sharpening sheath that sharpens the knife every time you house it in its unit. I have had many knives over the years go blunt this will never happen to this little knife. I love it. I would have given it five stars if it wasn't for the fact that it is not advised to put in the dishwasher for cleaning but rather advises you to use warm soapy water and wash by hand. This is not a big deal to most but it is to me I was disappointed because it meant that I would not be able to use this wonderfully cutting knife to slice up meat. Can you imagine? This knife cuts so well and you can't use it for meat because unless you use an antibacterial dish soap how will you sterilize it? We rely on the sanitation cycle in the dishwasher to sanitize all of our dishes and silverware so... this little knife is a no go for meat in this house. So disappointing because it cuts so well. We simply don't use antibacterial anything that is not organic and I don't think I would feel comfortable risking it with meat. Four stars for this little knife, it will cut up a storm with one minor flaw.

The Farberware Edgekeeper 5" Santoku knife is a basic everyday knife, certainly not as sharp as some that I own. This one is still very useful. The blade is thick and straight and flat with no curve at the tip, making it a good choice for chopping vegetables or herbs. The plastic handle feels small for my hand, but feels comfortable in my wife's small hand. It comes with a plastic sheath that allows me to safely store the knife in a drawer or carry it with me to a friend's house. The sheath also contains an Edgekeeper blade, which is basically two pieces of steel that you run the knife blade against when replacing or removing the knife from the sheath. This Edgekeeper also helps to hold the sheath on to the knife. The sheath is not the correct shape for this knife. It is probably was designed to hold several different type of knives. Overall, this knife is no better than other knives that you can buy at discount stores or grocery stores. The only thing that sets this knife apart from others in this category and the reason I would recommend it to others is the sheath that comes with it.

I am fortunate to have been able to receive this knife from the Walmart Spark Reviewer Program in exchange for my honest review. This knife was very attractive to us due to the fact that it self-sharpens itself every time you go to use it. The knife is a good size like any other Chef's knife but doesn't have the ease or sharpness when cutting as other Chef's knives do. It's an okay knife for an okay price but the built in sleeve sharpener is probably what you're paying for. Overall, it's a decent knife. It could be better but does the job.
