Farberware Edgekeeper 5-inch Santoku with Self-Sharpening Sheath

The Farberware Edgekeeper 5" Santoku with Self-Sharpening Sheath is a great product. I chose to review this item because I was interested in changing out all of my knives. I figured if this was a good product, I would go and buy a set after I made my review. I was not disappointed. This knife comes with a self sharpening sheath, which of course, sharpens each time you slide it in and out of the cover. To me that is an added bonus. I like my knives to have covers so that while I reach into my knife drawer, I don't get cut or stabbed.The size of this knife is perfect for me to handle. Not too big and not too small. The design on the knife is made so that foods do not stick to your knife while slicing. I always hated that when slicing cheeses or potatoes and other vegetables. This design allows air to be between the food and knife which prevent the foods from sticking and in turn allows for easy and fast slicing and chopping. This knife also has a nice wide surface to allow you to scoop up chopped ingredients. I definitely recommend this knife and plan on purchasing some as gifts for friends and family.

I received a 5" Farberware Edgekeeper Knife through the Walmart Spark Reviewer Program. I recently tried a ceramic knife and thought that was good, but this knife surpasses all my expectations! My knives are all quite old and not as sharp as they should be, so it was a treat to use such a good knife. The blade is 5" and with the handle it is 9" long. Just a perfect size. It is shaped like a chopper or mini cleaver with a wider blade. The blade is 1 3/4" wide. I used the knife for chopping onions and celery and it worked great. You can chop or rock it and it just really gets the job done. I like the fact that the sheath not only protects the knife, but also sharpens the knife every time you take it out and use it! Great concept! The sheath is rigid, so you don't have to worry about accidentally getting your fingers. Covers the whole blade and completely covers it. The knives come in different lengths, so you might want to check them out the next time you are in WalMart. These would also make a nice gift. PLEASE NOTE the blade is metal colored, not black like it appears in my picture.

I was looking forward to receiving this Santoku Knife. It is made by Farberware, which is a well known company, that I trust. It is a sturdy high carbon, stainless steel blade and is very strong, not at all flimsy. I enjoy cooking and so I do a lot of prep work. Sometimes slicing and chopping is a bit difficult, for me, as I have small, arthritic hands. I often find the big, long chef knives too unwieldy and heavy, for me, to use. They never seem to fit my small hand, the length is too much, they get too heavy, for me, and ultimately tire my arm out. I was hoping this smaller 5 inch knife would be easier, for me, to use and it is much easier. It is ergonomically designed, so it fits well into my hand and is comfortable, to use. I am now able to chop vegetables or slice through meats, to do my prep work, much more easily, than with a longer, heavier chef's knife. It is small enough that I may keep it in my cutlery drawer, which is a bit handier, than having it in the block. It is safely contained in a heavy sharpening sleeve, which has a built-in sharpener. The sharpener sharpens the edge, as the knife is removed. (This is great, as a dull knife is a dangerous knife - they tend to slip off the mark.) I am finding it much easier to chop and do my prep work, now, and would recommend this knife to anyone who enjoys cooking, but finds the larger chef knives difficult to handle. Thumbs up!

I'm not an Expert on knives, but I do like a good Chef's Knife to cut through bigger pieces of meat to cook them faster and Santoku is a cross between a Chef's Knife and a small Cleaver. And since I've got a few dull knives laying about in my drawers I was very excited to try out this Farberware Edgekeeper 5" Santoku with Self-Sharpening Sheath. First of, I really like the Fact that it comes with a Sheath and everyone who's ever accidentally cut themselves on a wayward knife in their drawer will most likely agree. That this Sheath has a Self-Sharpening feature for the Knife is an absolute bonus, as I said, got a few dull ones laying about. The Santoku Knife itself is great. It fit nicely in my hand, the plastic handle is not too thick and slicing through frozen Steak was like cutting through soft Butter. I didn't have to "saw" at the meat to get it cut up, it was fantastic. The Farberware Edgekeeper 5" Santoku with Self-Sharpening Sheath is Dishwasher safe which is also a plus, so you won't have to scald your hands trying to sanitize it by handwashing after cutting meat. Overall the Farberware Edgekeeper 5" Santoku with Self-Sharpening Sheath is a very nice Knife, I would recommend it and will be shopping for the rest of the Farberware Edgekeeper Collection of Knives to replace all those dull ones I've got.

... with this 5 inch Santoku style chef's chopping knife! I prepare and cook a lot of vegetables and my chopping knife, (which I've had for years) always seems to need sharpening. This won't be a problem with the ”Edgekeeper” feature of this high quality chef's knife. The knife fits easily inside the sharpening sleeve to keep/get a nice sharp edge for chopping/cutting. It's simple process to draw the knife in and out of the sleeve one or two times. Great feature for those of us whose hands might not be as strong as they once were. Storing the knife in a drawer with it inserted in the sleeve will protect that sharp edge too. But be careful! It truly does have a very sharp cutting edge. The weight of a chef's knife also plays a part in how the knife does it's job. The weight of this one seems to be just right for the many routine chopping, cutting and slicing tasks you might have. I was able to get very thin slices of onions and potatoes (used by me in a favorite recipe) easily with it and didn't have to drag out the mandolin slicing tool I usually need. As with any good knife with a really sharp edge, you will want to carefully wash it by hand and dry thoroughly before storing it. Never. I repeat never, put this kind of kitchen tool in the dishwasher!It's an unsafe practice for you AND the tool! I love this knife and expect to get many years of service from it. You can't go wrong with this one. 5 stars to it!

This Farberware 5 inch Santoku knife is light weight, easy to use and won't break the bank when you purchase it. The flat blade is high carbon stainless steel. It measures 5” long and 1-1/2” tall. The tapered cutting edge is ¼” tall and the hollowed-out indentions are another ¼” tall. The thickness of the blade is 1/16” so it is stiff and not flimsy. It does not flex like some light weight knives do. The handle is 4” long and ergonomically designed. It fits well in my hand. The knife comes with a protective hard PVC sheath that has a sharpener built into it. This sharpens the cutting edge of the blade every time you take it out and put it back in. The Santoku knife is used for all purpose chopping, slicing and mincing of vegetables and meats. The hollowed-out indentions along the sides of the blade keep food items from sticking to it. The blade is straight and flat not curved and tapered so cutting is done in a vertical motion rather than a rolling motion. The flat blade works well for scraping food off a cutting board. This 5” Santoku knife can be used on any item that a chef's knife would be too big for or any item that a paring knife would be too small to use. This knife fits right in between and does a fantastic job.

Farberware Edgekeeper 5" Santoku with Self-Sharpening Sheath Kitchen knife in everyday uses got dull from time to time, but now I'm glad Farberware Edgekeeper 5" Santoku with Self-Sharpening Sheath comes to market. No need to worry it always stay sharp and handy. So every time you pull the knife from sleeve and put it back the knife will pass through the built in sharpening that makes it a sharp blade all the time. The size is just perfect for chopping, slicing and mincing. I'm so amazed that this knife is really sharp with the design shallow rounded along both sides which makes the foods you cut wont stick to the knife and thats a great design helps make things easy, fast and saves time. The width is perfect, makes it easier to pick up slices foods. Another good thing about this knife is, it has safety features that it won't easily detached from the sleeves just push down slightly when all the way in and it will not fall off as additional safety measures. When removing from the sleeves just pull up and pull against the sleeve while you can feel it glided in between the built-in sharper, so it will stay in good condition. The knife is also made of high-carbon, stainless steel blades that makes it durable,strong and sharp. I definitely recommend this product to friends and relatives. So get and order this knife while the supply last…. and stay safe everyone!

I have never really found a knife that I liked or that I thought worked well until this baby came into my life. I can cut blocks of cheese with ease, I can cut tomatoes without squishing them and making a huge mess, this knife is absolutely amazing. It is very well made and I believe it will last for many years. The sharpening sheath is also very durable and it is genius as far as I am concerned. I will never have to worry about the knife getting dull because every time I take it out of the sheath or put it back in the sheath it is being sharpened. What more could I ask for!!!!

I have a higher end 7" santoku knife that is well balanced and is perfect for my cutting needs. However, I have arthritis and even though the knife is great, it is a little heavy and makes the cutting job somewhat laborious. I thought this 5" Farberware Edgekeeper would be better suited for me since it did not seem as heavy, I decided to use it to cut up some chicken for freezing. It did the job well. I was able to cut through the meat as well as cartilage and bone. The knife was plenty sharp and fit my hand well. It did not seem unbalanced or heavy. I later used it to lop off the ends of a pineapple and slice through it. I suppose this was not the right knife to use for that job. But it worked just fine. So after all is said and done. I was satisfied with this knife thus far and really like the sheath. I don't know about the built in sharpener. Only time will tell if it is really doing it's job. I do like that I can put this knife in a picnic basket or take it to a special event and not have to worry about the sharp knife causing any injuries or damage during transport. I have used other Farberware products and have never been dissatisfied with them.

The Farberware Edgekeeper 5" Santoku knife is a basic everyday knife, certainly not as sharp as some that I own. This one is still very useful. The blade is thick and straight and flat with no curve at the tip, making it a good choice for chopping vegetables or herbs. The plastic handle feels small for my hand, but feels comfortable in my wife's small hand. It comes with a plastic sheath that allows me to safely store the knife in a drawer or carry it with me to a friend's house. The sheath also contains an Edgekeeper blade, which is basically two pieces of steel that you run the knife blade against when replacing or removing the knife from the sheath. This Edgekeeper also helps to hold the sheath on to the knife. The sheath is not the correct shape for this knife. It is probably was designed to hold several different type of knives. Overall, this knife is no better than other knives that you can buy at discount stores or grocery stores. The only thing that sets this knife apart from others in this category and the reason I would recommend it to others is the sheath that comes with it.
