I recently took advantage of a online sale with free shipping. Got a deal on 3M Filtrete 12x30x1 AC air filters which typically sell for around $10 each locally (but on Wal-mart.com, they were $5.02 each - a bargain, right?!?) or so I thought. I ordered 12 filters since they were priced right. It seemed smart to stockpile a few so that way, I wouldn't have to search around town for them like I typically have to do. The AC filters arrived. It was such an overall bizarre experience, I really felt compelled to share my story (I even emailed the CEO in fact) because it was all unsettling. Here it goes. . .a couple of weeks ago, I heard a thump at my front door. When I opened the door, I see my mail carrier unloading 3 HUGE boxes (28x28x18) onto my front porch. She was using one of those moving dollies and making her way back to her truck to load up more. Well on her 2nd trip back to my door, I asked her how many more boxes were there and she said, "9". I thought, OMG! My mail carrier had to make FOUR separate trips (3 boxes per trip) to deliver the AC filters. Those boxes completely filled her truck which meant she would had to drive back to her main office to get the rest of my neighbors mail that wouldn't fit the first go around. She remarked to me that everyone back at her office were taking bets as to what was inside the boxes since they were so light. Her work group asked her to ask me the contents, so I told her. She was completely incredulous and stunned. She couldn’t believe that Wal-mart had actually sent each individual filter in it’s own box. She left and then I brought in the rest of the boxes. Let me tell you, it was quite a sight to see. My living room looked like a warehouse. Actually, the experience reminded me of the final warehouse scene from the movie, “Indiana Jones & the Raiders of the Lost Ark” or a really bad SNL comedy skit. As I stood there, I was like, "OMG, seriously"?!?! It was certainly surreal looking at all of the boxes sitting there in my living room, taking up about a ¼ of the space of my entire home. I've had NEVER seen anything like it. I guess in a weird and quirky way, and for a very brief moment, I found it all a tad bit comical. So much so, I took pictures, because I doubted that any of my friends would ever believe such absurdity. The funny moment quickly dissipated when the daunting reality of opening all 12 boxes suddenly rushed over me. Upon inspection of each box, I saw that the packer folks back at the Wal-Mart warehouse had carefully packed each filter with yards and yards and yards of those plastic protective air filled pocket strips. I did appreciate the “protection” attempt, but these were filters, not dishware. There were what seemed miles and miles of protective strips all stuffed into each and every box. I thought to myself, "how the heck am I going fit ALL this stuff into the recycle bin for the next pickup"? I decided to break down each box, and hand pop every single air filled strip (not nearly as fun as it may sound nor much of a stress reliever, believe me). I had to deflate all the long strips because of the sheer volume of space they took up-see photo. Breaking down all the boxes and all the “protective puffs” took what seemed an eternity. I remember feeling VERY grateful that your packing staff didn't choose Styrofoam peanuts! Can you imagine? Anyway, the packing material breakdown process took me 1.5 hrs to complete. No exaggeration! That is a lot time to waste having to do all that. Time which I'll never get back and my time is extremely valuable. So that was my recent Wal-Mart.com purchase experience, in painful detail. In retrospect, I may have gotten a "great deal" price wise,, but the ultimate lunacy of all the needless waste, was utterly mind-boggling. The waste of the packing materials/their cost, the time it took to pack them all up at the warehouse, your employee's salaries/time, the cost of shipping the boxes to me, the time/effort/expense to have USPS deliver, their salaries, the wear and tear of their vehicles/equipment, MY time to break everything down, my local waste management team’s time/facilities to process all that packing stuff but MORE importantly, the environmental issues surrounding all the materials/resources you are utilizing is completely disconcerting. All the plastic used is certainly not Eco-friendly. None of this sits well with me as a consumer, customer or a supporter of environmentalism. Honestly, I actually don't think I got such a great deal on the filters considering all the facts. I may be only one single customer, but I can't help to think about the long term exponential impact of this crazy scenario. I mean, how many other customers do you have out there who have had or will have similar experiences, or perhaps worse? Hundreds of thousands of customers times millions of items. When it comes to packing and shipping your products around the world, you really have an obligation to think, in this case, literally “outside the box”, and find more prudent, cost effective, time efficient, innovative, and environmentally responsible measures to deliver your merchandise. I have to be quite honest here, that this nonsensical situation has defiantly made me re-evaluate buying from Wal-Mart.com again. The end results seems too costly on too many levels.

The first box came mangled and appeared to have been previously opened and returned to Walmart. The replacement box was 3M labeled, but the filters are approximately 1/8" too large in width and height, so they do not fit. We've been using 3M Filtrete exclusively for some time in this size. I assume 3M has outsourced its manufacturing resulting in poor quality control. Avoid.
