Back to 1990s and 2000s, Gateway is a very trusted computer brand. I still remember my fellow classmate had a slim Gateway laptop while I carried a bulky Dell laptop around 2002 when we were in grad school studying computer science. I was jealous! However, sometime later, Gateway disappeared. Walmart brought it back recently selling the Brand's ultra slim laptops in very attractive price in different CPU, SSD, Screen configurations. Since then, many bought these Walmart tailored Gateway laptops and many nice comments were posted around. I read through them, the most attrative feature of the laptop to me is the easy expansion of storage. The laptop has two SSD storage slots, one internal that is only accessible when taking off the back cover, the other resides in a small chamber that is very easily accessible by users (see my picture with red circled out). The two SSD slots feature usually comes with expensive workstation class laptops, but Gateway brings it to me, and make it so simple to add an additional SSD (m.2 SSD ony, not PCIe NVME SSD)! I have the need in running two OSes in one computer so that I don't need to bring two laptops with me, but I don't want them reside together in one drive. This Gateway computer is perfect with such a low price! So when this latest model with 11th gen Intel Core i5 CPU comes to Walmart on sale, I bought one, install a PNY m.2 SSD to run Fedora Linux. I couldn't be happier!
The laptop is slim, very light weight, and feels premium. It looks like the black Dell Inspiron 14 5000 in 2019. For this 11th Gen CPU series (maybe call it Gateway Ultraslim 14 Gen2), it has 5 different colors (black, green, blue, rose gold, silver), but I chose the black one. The case is plastic but sturdy. It features an Intel Core i5-1135G7 quadcore octathreads CPU, 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. It comes with Intel AC9461 Wifi and a Blutooth, Realtek audio with THX tuned, Intel Xe graphic chip, 14" FHD 1080p LCD, webcam, it also come with Trusted Platform 2.0, fingerprint reader, 2 USB Type A ports, 1 USB Type C port, 1 HDMI port, and 1 microSD card slot which can support up to 512GB. But no Thunderbolt (the USB Type C port only supports data transfer, not charging, not display port), no backlit keyboard, and no IR camera. It runs on Window 10 Home. For the price less than $500, it is a fully featured laptop! Worth every dollar of the price. The laptop is manufactured by Acer, a very trusted brand, in China.
I had used for a few days before I release this review. The computer works flawlessly. The keyboard feels good in typing. I am typing this review on this laptop in fact. However, the touchpad is kind of stiffy and hard to use, it fequently messes up the two-finger gestures. The LCD is vivi in color. The laptop is not hot and no fan noise at all for a few hours' use. The battery has no problem in supporting 8 hours use for a single charge so I don't have to bring adaptor when I go out.
The laptop is very fast, it takes less than 8 sec
