I bought this as a value with the hope that it would work as advertised. It does! Although listed as able to cool a 100 sq ft room, I find it is able to cool an even bigger space. My main living area is about 250 sq. ft and it does the job. It is quiet as well...I recommend it!
I bought this same model ac last summer and it is still working as good as new. This is a great value, because while it says it is a 5,050 BTU, it is actually a 5200 BTU. I bought the second one for my bedroom, because I work nights and my apartment has a weird layout. Very happy.
This is a great little air conditioner! I bought it to cool my granddaughter's room that for some reason is always too warm or just plain HOT! It's lightweight, quiet, and works extremely well. It has a couple of settings and is relatively low cost. My granddaughter came out of her room and commented that for once, her room is cooler than the rest of the house with the central air running. We're completely satisfied so far...but I haven't received a utility bill yet. To be continued...
This is my 2nd purchase of this GE 5050 Air Conditioner after owning my 1st for about 16 months.....It cools my bedroom which is about 200 square feet in about 15/20mins depending on the day's heat. It is fairly quiet, easy to install and performs well. This purchase is to replace an 8000BTU AC which eats electricity compared to size of room it cools.....I have read bad reviews on this A/C, but the two I have purchased have worked great! I do purchase the extended warranty on these A/C's
We bought this for our son and daughter-in-law because they have a newborn and it was too hot! Even though it's a very small air conditioner, it actually cools several rooms by using fans to blow the cool air throughout their small home. When I walked in the front door, it was amazingly cool! They are so happy with this unit. We like that this is a mechanical air conditioner because if the electricity goes off (happens frequently in our area), the unit starts right back up when the electricity goes back on. The electronic units won't restart on their own.
I was shopping on line and read the reviews. This unit was easy to install, but i needed help, one to hold the unit in the window and one to close the upper window and adjust the side accordion sides. This unit instantly cooled my very hot room windows facing north and east. I put a stand up fan at the door of the adjoining room to utilize the coolness of the sun room. So, two rooms for the price of one room air conditioner. It annual operating cost is estimated at $42.00 per insert. If this gets me 3 years i will be happy. I will take it out of the window for the winter. I did not attach this unit to the sides of the window frame. Just used the upper window and a secure board to keep the window pressed down. Great value Is my thoughts ...and why did i wait 15 years for this unit I will never know... DUMB DUMB ME. I just dealt with 1 ceiling fan and two room stand alone fans
I got this out of the box and was very confused by the directions for installing. I looked up a video and it didn't look hard. I did it myself with a power drill and the screws it came with. I recommend buying the extra insulation as well. My bedroom and the room next to ours is freezing now! It is also very very quiet. The power cord is super long as well and plugs into a three prong outlet.
For only $109.00 it is a great value. Cools my large bedroom really well even when it's over 90. It is rated only 50 BTU higher than the Arctic King I had, but cools much better. Sure it has no remote and very few functions other than fan and cool with high and low speed settings, but then again, you want it to cool, not to set your DVR! Very good A/C for the money.
I bought this because it was mechanical with two nice large knobs instead of those useless for me digital screens that are hard to see without a flashlight in the evening and beep at you. This GE model was the only small one that had side accordion panels that fit window widths up to 38" rather than 36". While the air direction adjustment is only left and right, it works well enough. One precaution- make sure when you install it that the electrical cord goes up to through the small cut out on the left side and doesn't go under the air-conditioner which happened at first when my handyman installed it rather quickly. The directions are very good- especially the part that reminds you to be sure it's installed level with a slight tilt toward the outside- and to use a level to measure. I didn't do that with a previous air conditioner ( the digital one, another brand) and wound up with water inside the window sill that damaged the wall paint before I noticed it. Another advantage is the very accessible air filter. I've owned room air conditioners for over 50 years and two of this capacity with all windows closed and unused rooms closed off during the worst heat of the day, can keep a three bedroom ranch house comfortable. It helps to have a forced air heating system with a fan that keeps running with the heat off and circulates the air conditioned air with the naturally cooler basement air - dehumidified by a basement dehumidifier. The key to comfort is keeping your windows closed and buying air conditioners with smaller BTU ratings that will run all the time.
I bought this to replace a much larger unit I had bought at WM a few yrs. back and which gave me nothing but problems, plus was a back breaker to take in and out of the window. The best thing about it was it was more than large enough to cool down my bedroom, but the novelty of the remote soon wore off when I discovered my TV remote also worked on the a/c. (the previous channel button turned the a/c off, the volume control changed the fan speed, etc.) I wasn't for sure this one could do the job, but was pleasantly surprised after 20-30 minutes of running - it was like an oven in the room when I fired off the new a/c but got cooled down quickly. What I really like about it, other than the manageable weight, are the dial controls. The main problem with my last a/c was the digital control panel, sometimes having to push a button a dozen times to get it to work. I don't need a remote for my air conditioner - it's just a few feet to walk to turn it up/down/on/off. I'm really glad I bought it.
