A Masterclass in Whodunnit

Kevin August 20, 2025

%23%23 A Masterclass in Modern Whodunnit: "Knives Out" is a Deliciously Twisty Triumph Rian Johnson's "Knives Out" isn't just a movie; it's a meticulously crafted gift to anyone who loves a good mystery. It's a film that respects the genre's traditions while gleefully subverting them, delivering a viewing experience that is both comforting and exhilaratingly fresh. From its opulent setting to its star-studded ensemble, "Knives Out" is a rare gem that shines brightly. The film centers on the enigmatic death of renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (a wonderfully cantankerous Christopher Plummer) during his 85th birthday celebration. What begins as a potential suicide quickly morphs into a full-blown murder investigation when the eccentric and impossibly observant private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig, delivering a career-highlight performance) is anonymously hired to uncover the truth. What immediately sets "Knives Out" apart is its sheer charisma. The ensemble cast is an absolute dream team, with each actor sinking their teeth into their wonderfully flawed and often hilarious characters. Jamie Lee Curtis as the sharp-tongued Linda, Chris Evans as the smarmy yet somehow charming Ransom, Toni Collette as the bewilderingly self-absorbed Joni, and Michael Shannon as the volatile Walt are all pitch-perfect. But it's Ana de Armas as Marta, Harlan's gentle and loyal caregiver, who truly anchors the film. Her performance is a masterclass in quiet strength and emotional resonance, making her the beating heart of the mystery. Johnson's screenplay is a marvel of intricate plotting. He skillfully doles out clues and red herrings with such delightful precision that the audience is constantly engaged, trying to piece together the puzzle alongside Blanc. The narrative structure is particularly ingenious, offering early revelations that could be seen as plot twists in any other film, but here serve as springboards for deeper layers of intrigue. The "how" and "why" are just as compelling as the "who," and Johnson masterfully juggles these elements. Beyond the whodunnit mechanics, "Knives Out" is also a sharp, witty social commentary. It cleverly skewers the ultra-wealthy and their entitlement, their hidden hypocrisies, and their desperate attempts to maintain their privilege. The dialogue crackles with intelligence and humor, offering biting observations without ever feeling preachy. Visually, the film is a feast for the eyes. The sprawling, gothic mansion is a character in itself, filled with an eclectic array of curiosities that add to the film's gothic charm and provide ample opportunities for visual gags and crucial plot points. The cinematography is rich and atmospheric, perfectly complementing the tone of the film. In a landscape often saturated with predictable sequels and formulaic blockbusters, "Knives Out" is a breath of fresh air. It's a film that trusts its audience, rewards attention to detail, and most importantly, delivers pure, unadult
