I use lemon juice to make water more palatable. I'd be dehydrated if I hadn't started to do this several years ago. Over the course of a routine TKR hospitalization, I was drinking huge quantities of bottled lemon in my water AND I noticed increased phlegm production which couldn't be explained away by seasonal or or other allergic reactions. I hadn't suspected a correlation. My son suggested I look into the amount of preservative I was unwittingly consuming. On researching the preservative used in many lemon-from-concentrate preparations, I discovered that, in its powdered form, the preservative, sodium metabisulfite, is linked to respiratory irritation. (Not the same as citric acid) I stopped consumption of the reconstituted juices completely and started with one pint of pure, natural, bottled lemon juice. Within a week, the phlegm pfactory had mostly stopped. At the end of 2 weeks, all the irritation was totally GONE. This is 6x the price, but 100x the quality and essential to my health.
