Over the past year, I've ordered several handmade leather journals (from Walmart.com)--to use for art, writing, and junk-journaling. Their sellers' prices are more affordable for this type of item, compared to other online retailers, for similar (or even the same!) products. I recently chose this one, to add to my growing collection. It arrived only a few (business) days, after placing my order. The leather-wrap cover measures 5x7 inches (when closed), as in the description. There are 5 signatures of deckled-edge (lined) cotton paper, with 20 sheets per signature, equalling 100 sheets (200 pages)--also, as in the description--well-sewn, into the binding. The water buffalo hide used in making the cover, is of good quality/thickness (and is straight/evenly cut, with a nice leather tie, for closure). It comes in an attractive shade of chocolate brown, and has a realistic 'aged' appearance, as though it's already many decades old. Looks like the online photo. (If you want a small journal for travel, or even to take along with you in a purse or belt-bag, this one is a good choice.) I also like the simple design of the journal, and how it feels in my hand. (The plain cover can be personalized, too!) However, my reasons for giving this product only 4 stars, are: 1) the strong SMELL, and 2) the patina of the pages. Have you ever walked through the shoe-aisle at a department store in early Spring, just as the clerks are opening fresh boxes packed with cheap foam flip-flops, to stock the shelves? Well, as soon as I unwrapped the plastic bag from around this journal, that's EXACTLY how it smelled--like new flip-flops!! Now, I happen to LIKE that scent (it reminds me of Summertime)...but, NOT when it's emanating from a beautiful leather journal! I was very disappointed, that it didn't smell the way leather should (I'm guessing the crafter used some kind of chemical-treatment on the cover and paper, to prevent insect and mildew damage, which is common with these journals, during storage/shipment). As for the pages--they're supposed to look 'aged', but instead, are a bright mustard-yellow color! Most people would prefer a natural beige-tone, so I don't know WHY this was done. It cheapened the entire look of the product, which could've been really nice. The lines on the pages, are printed thick and black (with a place for writing in the date), which seems a bit tacky. Other than those things, this is a cool little journal, for the low price (I missed-out on saving 2 dollars during a recent sale, but it was still inexpensive, at only 13 dollars!). I'm probably going to use this as a junk or art journal, so the odd color of the pages (and dark lines) won't matter. I've aired-out the journal for several days, and the smell isn't as potent as it was. Not sure if this item would be good for gifting to someone else (due to the scent), but maybe as a gift to...yourself!! (PS--another reviewer mentioned the smell, too.)
