Melissa & Doug Music Makers 7-Piece Wooden Musical Instrument Set

My son really enjoys the shakers and the tambourine. We listen to music and play our instruments along. It's keeps him engaged for about 10 minutes. I purchased this item on clearance but wouldn't purchase at full price.

I am a fan of Melissa and Doug toys and this 7 piece instrument set is no exception. It is nicely packaged in a sturdy wooden box and it would make a good gift item for ages 3+. The set contains 5 instruments: tambourine, wooden kazoo, 2 wooden maracas, a wooden handle castanet, and 2 cymbals. All the pieces are nice visually and all are well made, but functionally the kids seem to have a little difficulty with the kazoo. Outside of that, this set has been a very popular toy with my kids. I love seeing them be creative and making their own music.

This is such a cool music set. It has all the makings for an impromptu band. Everything comes in a short wooden crate. I actually use the crate for myself. It's nicely sturdy and I use it for my nail polish. The music set comes with many noisemakers. It comes with a wooden handle castanet, two cymbals, two maracas, a tambourine, and a wooden kazoo. The kazoo actually came with directions, which I didn't realize that I actually needed. Each of the noisemakers seems to be made nicely. They all seem to hold together well and not break easily. My toddler daughter actually stepped on top of the tambourine and it still held together. I would not recommend doing that though. The tambourine also has a hole along the side of it that makes it easier to hold onto. The wooden handle castanet is held together by what seems to be a hair tie. It doesn't look too sturdy, but it has held together well. My daughter plays rough and the tie hasn't loosened at all. All in all, this is a great music set for early learners. Each item holds together well and will more than likely last for a long time.

If you can catch this on clearance, it's a great value. (I got it for around $13.) I appreciate the variety of instruments, the wooden tray to store them in, the kid-friendly size, and the muted noise level. In general, I am pleased with Melissa %26 Doug products, and specifically seek them out. (I would not pay full price, however, because it's relatively easy to find M%26D products on sale, and they always end up in the mouth of my perpetually-teething toddler.)

Purchased this on sale for around $14. I would not pay full price for it. All the items are of decent quality except the kazoo. Really doesn't work well and I don't think it's age appropriate for this set.

This is a beautiful set of well made instruments, they aren't loud by any means. The sounds the instruments make are muted, significantly. If the goal is to play with a beautiful toy, the goal was achieved. If the goal was to introduce musical instruments, the goal fell flat.

This is decent since it comes with several items if you can get it on sale. The maracas and clapper are kind of quiet, kazoo is odd, but the tambourine is good quality since my toddler bangs in it a lot.

Two stars is being generous. The maracas are ok but nothing else in this package makes enough sound to describe it in any way as a "musical instrument." Of course, you don't discover this until the package is open and all items are removed to test. Makes it impossible to return.
