Great addition to the Fallout mythos

Liam February 6, 2026

In the span of the last couple of years, many attempts at video-game adaptations have been made but the large majority are inferior to their original. With Fallout, the situation is unique, because while it is an adaptation, it is a direct continuation based on what has come before. Each game in the series is in the same universe, at a different time, with not much overlap between them, but this show does a phenomenal job at weaving a cohesive, linear story with respect for the original and adding on to it in the proper ways. Much like the source material, the story mostly follows and is relatively centered around a resurfaced vault dweller with a mission in the wasteland. A nice twist in this series is that while there is a major focus on this template, the central cast consists of many deeply developed and complex characters to represent their individual perspective and stance on the grim situation of the wasteland, and this leads to a departure of just the one vault dweller, or lone wanderer, or sole survivor, etc. making every change in the story basically by themselves. Each of the 3 main characters, Lucy, Maximus, and The Ghoul, have an entirely personal and interesting plot line that is handled very well by this show with how they managed the interweaving of the singular mission or objective into one big blend, displaying a vast and lively world all interacting in a seamless way. The themes of loss of innocence, the struggle to remain whole when forced to do devastating things out of desperation and necessity to survive, and what humanity as a whole can survive, specifically what they will do to endure, feel extremely visceral, mimicking the weight of the games. The focus with the Ghoul being about the pre-war events with the heavy-hitter characters involved with the lead up to the bombs dropping really benefits the series as a whole by giving insight into the overall agenda and sophisticated network of behind-the-scenes projects, creating a frame for all that comes after, and providing a thorough backstory for both the show and the game series. Overall, this show does just about every category of the original's allure and what made it special justice. The wacky and zany elements, gritty seriousness, and vibrant cast, world, and situation are all translated very reverentially from the games to the show. The production quality is off the charts, the cinematography is stunning (watched on a 4K Blu-Ray on an OLED TV), the story is an innovative evolution of the formula, and just about everything else is immaculately handled in, what I would say, is the best video-game adaptation to date.
