Beautiful and easy!

Mike27520 March 6, 2026

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've had great results using Minwax Oil-Based Stain on my wood projects. It applies smoothly, penetrates well, and brings out the natural beauty and grain of the wood. I like that it offers rich, consistent color and gives projects a professional look when applied correctly. I typically finish my pieces with a beautiful clear coat, and the final result always looks clean, durable, and high-end. Overall, Minwax Oil-Based Stain has been a dependable product for me and one I continue to use on all of my wood projects.

Great product, easy application, great finish!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use Gunstock 231 for most of my finishes. I love the look it adds to oak. Between the penetrating stain and the Minwax water based Poly, two great products.

Beautifully highlights the natural oak woodgrain!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My daughter and I applied the original oil based Minwax penetrating oil based stain in Golden oak on stripped oak planks that are over 60 years old. The stain was applied with a high quality polyester bristle brush for applying stain and a lot of hand rubbing after allowing the stain to penetrate for about 10 mins. Wow, it looks great!!

How to use it properly.

TomKat January 14, 2020

I purchased this and tested it on some pine. I had some blotchy results initially when I tried to stain soon after I wiped off the excess. Best to let it dry a good hour or so then apply the stain and it will be perfect. You need to let the conditioner fully dry otherwise it hasn't created the proper seal below the surface.

What a great product!

Used Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner before staining a pine bed headboard we made. Followed the manufacturer directions and got exactly the result we wanted. Prepared the pine by sanding up to 180 grit. Applied the pre stain conditioner with a brush paying attention the knots to ensure full coverage, then removed the excess with a rag after 10-15 minutes. Let it dry for around an hour as it wasn't too warm in our basement. Then applied Minwax Wood Finish Stain in Espresso colour (as per Minwax directions) and it looks fantastic. Thanks for the excellent products!

Use on every wood stain project. Plan your work.

Ford33 February 10, 2019

I make cabinets and use Minwax oil based stain on them. I use the conditioner on every project. Follow the directions and wipe off all excess within 15 minutes and stain with 2 hours and results are great. Plan your work so you can do this within the time frame required. If you attempt to do too much staining within 15 minutes of application you will get poor results. Follow directions and get good results.

Loyalty for a reason

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After trying out several wood stains for my art work other brands could not compare. Since then I only use Minwax Wood Finish for all my artwork. The colors penetrate beautifully, Enhancing every piece. I have ever single color I can get my hands on.
