Citronella Oil

Grump February 16, 2017

I purchased the oil to keep our pups from digging hole in the yard. Worked GREAT!!! After filling up the hole I just sprinkled the oil all around the area. One nice thing about the bottle is that it has a plastic insert in the neck that causes the oil to only drip out. You actually have to shake it up/down while the bottle is upside down to get it to come out. Can't beat the price either.....

Citronella oil salad dressing for a bad kitty

Pwca July 1, 2020

Purchased citronella oil to discourage my cat from eating my shamrocks. The smell only discouraged me. Larry (the cat) thinks it's a salad dressing. But, the product is definately citronella oil! No false advertising here!

Great natural bug deterrent

Heather F May 23, 2025

Love essential oils for natural bug deterrent. Citronella, lemongrass, and peppermint straight up work wonders. Haven't had to douse myself with chemicals for years to keep fleas, ticks, chiggers, etc. at bay.

Bye Bye Bugs

Diana T December 19, 2023

When a pesky insect is around, I soak cotton balls with citronella oil, place one in several tiny bowls and set one in each room. Insects vanish from my space. This also works to repel spiders, etc when I'm gone for a few months. Check out side effects of using/inhaling too much.

Works great!

balesf August 11, 2013

Our family started making our own bug spray last summer, and use this as one of the ingredients. The price can't be beat, and we're so happy with our homemade "natural" bug deterrent. Smells good and does exactly what we want it to! I added it to homemade lye soap this summer, and was super happy with how it reacted in that as well.

bug buster

allmanatabq October 23, 2013

I keep this oil on hand and place a few drops on a cotton ball placed in an empty, open Rx bottle. I place one in every drawer and storage container on the patio, etc. If the bugs are bad and we have people visiting, I place some in a spray bottle and mist the patio area, etc. the mist settles on posts, picnic table, etc. and repels the bugs for hours.

Simple Solution to a Pesky Problem

Trailblazing August 24, 2013

I am a horseback rider and I take my trusty Tennessee Walker "Rock" to the woods often. There is always a problem with those pesky horseflies and other insects, so I just use Citronella essential on my horse and I use it on me too!! I made a spray with the oil and I use it whenever we hit the trails. I even put the bottle of Citronella in my saddlebag just in case I feel I may need a little extra and I simply put a drop here or there on Rock and a few drops on my clothes. Flies and other insects just seem to ignore us as we ride all through the deep woods. Such a SIMPLE solution to a PESKY problem!!!

This is what citronella smells like...

Mammal August 6, 2012

... and it can become a bit "swampy" and pungent indoors. To control closet insects (carpet beetles), high-linalool oils like lavender and rosewood seem to be more effective. Patchouli has a history of use to repel moths, but I've never suffered those so can't speak to its effectiveness. Citronella probably has its uses, and could be an interesting base or fixative, but if I were assembling an "aromatherapy" kit to make my place smell better, I'd go for a plain lemongrass oil first. (Citronella is essentially a 'danker' variety of lemongrass.)
