I wanted to own this 90's disaster movie because of the nostalgia, but also wanting the 4K transfer. The movie looks tremendous. The dark scenes stand out in HDR and the sound quality is amplified with the Atmos soundtrack.
Lots of action! If you like end of world type movies, then this is one to watch!
Arrived safely, packaged well.
fast shipping and great seller...thank you Walmart
Love this movie! Great story and visual.
Came perfect and quick. Good one to add to a 4k collection if you're looking into movie collecting.
The Video Transfer: Paramount's 25th Anniversary 2160p HEVC-encoded transfer (presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio) is a massive, night-and-day upgrade over the terribly processed, edge-enhanced 2009 Blu-ray. Sourced from a fresh scan of the original camera negatives, the native 35mm film grain is beautifully intact, tightly resolved, and lends a wonderful, organic texture to the image. The Dolby Vision (and HDR10) grading handles the late-'90s cinematography beautifully. Flesh tones are perfectly naturalized compared to the old pinkish tint, and primaries—especially the fiery explosions and the stark, blinding whites of the comet surface—boast excellent highlights without clipping. Black levels are deep and inky, providing stellar shadow detail in the vastness of space during the Messiah shuttle sequences, completely avoiding any noticeable black crush. However, the encode suffers from classic "Paramounting." While the average video bitrate floats at a healthy 70 to 80 Mbps across the BD-100 disc, there are puzzling moments where the variable bitrate randomly craters, leading to brief compression anomalies. The most egregious drop occurs during the hill scene where Elijah Wood and Leelee Sobieski are talking under a tree; the bitrate bottoms out, causing the grain to momentarily look blocky and digitally noisy before recovering. Thankfully, the late-90s digital CGI effects aren't artificially scrubbed with DNR, allowing the model work of the Messiah to blend seamlessly with the soft, dated visual effects. The Audio Mix: While the visuals got a premium upgrade, the audio is a direct port of the legacy 24-bit 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track from 2009. The lack of a modern, object-based Dolby Atmos or DTS:X remix is a major missed opportunity for a disaster film of this scale. That said, the existing 5.1 mix holds its own. The soundstage is remarkably wide up front, keeping dialogue absolutely crisp and centered. Surround channel activity is quiet during the heavy exposition scenes, but it aggressively mechanics into life during the space walks and the entire third act. James Horner's sweeping orchestral score is beautifully separated across the channels with superb fidelity. Lower frequencies (LFE) are tight and punchy—the roar of the comet passing overhead and the massive tidal wave sequence will absolutely rumble your room—but it feels slightly more subdued than what a modern spatial audio track would have delivered. The Verdict: If you are buying this for a massive audio upgrade, you will be disappointed by the recycled track. But as a visual preservation of a '90s catalog classic, the stunning Dolby Vision presentation and crisp native film grain make this an essential shelf upgrade for physical media enthusiasts. 4/5 stars.
