I don't see how this drill press can be beat for the money - easy assembly, dead-on balls accurate (once the lasers are dialed in), plenty of power for my needs.
Really nice bench top drill press with useful feature like laser alignment at a very reasonable price. I've only owned it a little over a week so I can't speak to durability, but so far I'm very satisfied.
I love the strength it has. In the past, strength on bench top drill presses have left a lot to be desired. This thing is strong!! I really really like the laser guide on here too. It takes all the guesswork out of hitting center on the workpiece.
I purchased Skil because I've known there tools to be made very well over the years. I used the drill everyday and I have not had one problem. I like the light as well as the laser feature. I am happy I bought this and so far I would recommend the drill to anyone. I also like that it's red on the top it brightens up my shop
The manual says that it has a drilling depth of 2", but I can only get a little over 1.5", which is not enough have room to position the piece and then to drill through a 2x4 fully, cleanly, with a spade bit (the point makes it through, barely, so at least I can see where to drill from the other side). I also found that loosening the tension lock knob did not provide enough slack to move the belt to adjust the speed; I had to also loosen the barely accessible motor mounts, and even then moving the belt was frustratingly difficult. I gave it 3 stars instead of only 2 because it's adequate for my need to drill soft wood (even though I have to drill from both sides to get cleanly through a 2x4); it was the only unit available in my rural area, which is not the fault of the drill press; and it's affordable. You get what you pay for, and this unit is what I can pay for, so I'm taking what I can get.
I was attracted to the Skil name because I have some other Skil power tools. I am disappointed in the quality of two of the main functions. The operation of the chuck is nearly unusable due to the jaws locking up without cause sometimes. The elevation adjustment is poor quality. Other brands I tried have a smoother and sturdier gear mechanism. The laser feature works well.
It's to small and under powered for my needs, seems like more of a toy, alot of vibration on high speed, had return it. It may okay for small jobs.
The supplied drill chuck is of poor quality. The drill bit is easily bent to one side on a sloped surface.
Rattle Rattle, Replacing a 50+ year old Drill press. Though this would be a good option. I am going to repair the old one after seeing the quality of this unit.
I could not get the shelf "level with the crank" to go up or down. A friend looked at it and tried reinstalling that shelf and it worked going up and down using the crank. I looked at it and told him that he had put the shelf on upside down with the tilt degrees facing down. We went and took that shelf off and reinstalled it with the correct side being up. with the shelf installed correctly, it still did not go up or down. We took that shelf off again and reinstalled it upside down and it worked. I will not be able to use the tilt function and will use a level instead.
