Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

This 4K UHD release of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" follows a number of earlier releases of the film, but this new version is much improved over the earlier DVD release which suffered from a little too much digital clean-up. The watercolor backgrounds are particularly vivid in the 4K HDR version, with subtle detail visible in the animation and the environments that makes this release as close to a theatrical experience as possible. I was also impressed by the supplementary material -- several substantial documentaries that dig into the Disney Archives to find story meeting notes, storyboard sketches, audio interviews from people who worked on the film, and archival photos of animators, inkers and painters, and multiplane camera operators at work. Some of the material has been seen before -- two deleted sequences that didn't make it past pencil test -- but not at this level of quality. This is a classic of animation, establishing the then-doubtful idea that a cartoon could work at feature length -- and this set presents solid evidence about WHY Snow White worked as a feature, and the storytelling, artistic and technical innovations that allowed it to entertain an audience at a time when cartoons were always one-reel affairs meant for a few quick laughs. I love vintage animation and releases like this remind me that Walt Disney looms large in the industry's history -- not because no interesting work was being done elsewhere, but because the studio survives today and maintained extensive records of its own history. Getting to see some of that material in detail makes this a fantastic package -- the film looks as good as it probably ever will, but the history documented here is just as important.

This is in my top 5 favorite animated films by Disney! Getting the 4K Ultra HD upgrade treatment makes the movie all the more enjoyable!
