I have lower back pain. I purchased this to limit my bending and pulling weeds. I was very skeptical until i put it to work. It is an amazing tool! Just place it over the weed, push into the ground with your foot and tilt. Nothing difficult, simple, and easy. Good quality, not too bulky or heavy. I could have used one of these a long time ago!
I was on the fence about ordering this because there are some negative reviews. Well it turns out many of those are because the person didn't know the way this was intended to be used. Think of this as a lawn tweezers. You step down on the foot bar to plant the tip deep in the soil. Then you lean the bar towards the foot peg and this forces the pincher to close on the root. As you keep levering the bar it will pry the weed out of the ground. Think of using a claw hammer to pull nails as the analogy. The smart parts of the design are 1) using your body weight to drive it into the dirt, 2) using a long lever to both pinch and pry the weed out. At that point I use the side of my shoe to try to scrape the weed out of the prongs. I've used it for a week now and each time I go out, I remove 100-200 weeds from the lawn. I just leave them on the grass and then dice them to oblivion with the lawn mower. If you leave the dandelions they can pull nutrition from the remaining plant and produce seeds after a couple of days. I like this so much, I made a video, but apparently I can't upload that here. (sigh) Weed or grass parts can become lodged in the prongs. It also leaves little holes in your lawn about 1.5 inches square. So if that gives you distress, maybe this isn't the tool for you. But rest assured after a couple days they fill in. The surrounding dirt either expands to fill in the hole when watered or the grass grows toward the open space. I figure it's not that different than using a plug aerator. Depending on how dry your soil is, the weeder can snap the root off after the pinchers (they have a 2.5 inch depth), or it can pull the whole thing out. I've included a couple of best case scenario pix.
it works great, but if you are really tall you would wish the handle was longer! I am 5 ft 8 and my son is 6 ft 2 and we both mentioned how we wished the wooden handle is longer. I love how it grabs the weed root deep and pulls it straight out of the yard.
Thought it would make pulling the weeds easier. It did. The main problem is that you have to push it down onto the root of the plant. This turns out to be more difficult than it would seem. Often you are just pulling up a couple of the leaves, and the root is 1/2 inch in another direction.
It is a solid instrument. My issue is that the handle is backwards so you have to pull up to tighten the claws to grab the weed root. That is awkward for a foot so I have to bend over to use my hands to pull up and that's hard on my back. It works, it just takes a lot more effort than expected.
The "claws" on the tool need to be longer and less bulky... perhaps sharper. They don't dig into the dirt deep enough to get a hold of the roots. They wind up pulling up a big clod of dirt along with only the top part of the weed and very little root. Also, you have to reach out and push the lever to release the weed from it's jaws into the bag or trash can. It is very clumsy to use, and doesn't do what I bought it for: Pull up dandelions and other similar weeds by the root.
Main reason for poor review. I ordered the weed puller, and was shipped a shovel. When I immediately notified Walmart of the situation, my only option was to return shovel. No replacement sent. I'll have to go order it again and hope. Instead, I'll just buy it elsewhere.
there should be a disclaimer that this item doesn't work on stone filled yard. then i have a double charge for this product. i ordered 1 table 4' i got charged $84.70
Wasn't what we expect it to be. Didn't work that well for pulling weeds and also left a hole where each one was tried. Realized it was of no use for what we needed.
I was excited to get the gardening tool. It was made incorrectly. The prongs are supposed to go in the dirt and you step on the lever to close the prongs. Instead it was the other way. Made in china. I'm returning it.
