The pail is small enough to fit on a kitchen counter and holds a week's compost material. The top is ventilated, can be positioned to stay up while adding scraps, or can be folded back. The plastic container is easy to clean and doesn't hold odors. Sprinkling baking soda inside it helps to keep odors at bay during humid weather. I use compostable bags, ordered from Walmart, to line it.
No bugs, no smell, doesn't stain. I love how it latches, the lid stays up the sturdy handle.
No smell!! I was weary about it because there is not a filter but I've used it for over a week and even if we leave egg shells overnight there is no smell coming from it!
So far so good. Waiting until planting season to add the compost to my garden.
What can I say? It's just a refuse bucket Qualities Lid is good I'd recommend
Perfect size, easy to clean. However, it is a hotbed for fruitflies, and therefore do not recommend it. We used a cheap plastic holiday cookie container for months, decided we should have a true compost container. We never had an issue with bugs with the cheap container, yet somehow immediately had issues with this bin. We are emptying frequently (more than 1x /week) and cleaning when emptied so not sure why the bugs are occuring.
Positives: 1) This compost bin works fairly well, no odor when the top is closed. I use it with a compostable bag, but liquid leaks through the bag (I'm going to try some heavier ones). 2) It holds about a week's worth of scraps (mas o menos) for just the two of us. If you cook and have a big family, you'll probably need to dump it more often. (For us, it seems to depend mostly on how much we eat in and how much we go out.) 3) It's very easy to clean; to keep it sanitary, I use Clorox Cleanup on it after it gets dumped weekly, but any anti-bacterial cleaner would work well. Negatives: 1) It isn't particularly fashion forward, and the color wouldn't blend well with most kitchen decor (which may not matter to some as much as it does to me), but at the time of purchase I was looking for cheap and functional because I had never composted before, and I wanted to see if I could get my husband to even cooperate! Now that we've been doing it with success for the better part of a year, I'm prepared to spend more for something that looks a little better. 2) Another problem, for me anyway, is that I'm more comfortable with it close to the sink, but I don't have a lot of counter space there due to paper towles and a few other essentials that I keep there. 3) BUT the biggest issue I have with this composter is that it attracts bugs, especially when the weather is warm (which it mostly is here in southern California). I'm not an entymologist, but they look like fruitflies. I think it's all those little holes in the top of the bin, and the bugs can smell what's inside, even if we can't. The new one I'm getting has charcoal filters and a tightly fitting lid with NO holes. The color and shape will go perfectly in my kitchen. It also costs a little more than twice as much, but I think it will be more than worth it.
its alright, better to invest in a good bin that has filter. THis causes little bugs/flies and smells !! I got this because I ordered bags that fit in 2gal... Most of the compost bins are under 2gal.., still wish I got a real compost bin lol
This is the FOURTH compost bucket in my search for one that fruit flies cannot access. It does snap shut but there's still plenty of room for the darn fruit flies. Argh! 😩
Make sure to pay attention to your orders. This pail was horrible quality. When I tried to return it, the company insisted I pay to return it and insure it. They will not reimburse me for it. Had I known I couldn't return it to Walmart, I would never have purchased it. These vendors should have same policies as WM. Walmart should refund me for this purchase.
